Keynote speakers pose challenges

That’s the bold vision of Guy Ryan, founder and CEO of the charity Inspiring Stories.
Guy called on the audience to reimagine education by:
- Discovering new models of learning and collaboration.
- Creating powerful experiences and building degrees and qualifications around them.
- Harnessing technology and having content delivered by world-class people here and overseas.
- Fostering connectivity and partnerships, and thinking more about global opportunities.
New Zealand is capable of meeting challenges, says Guy, because we are “the tiny nation that can”.
Dr Lisa Coleman
Dr Coleman is Senior Vice President for Global Inclusion and Strategic Innovation and Chief Diversity Officer of New York University.
She challenged the audience’s thinking with questions such as:
- How are Millennials and Generation Z students asking us to think differently about inclusion, diversity and belonging?
- How might unconscious bias manifest itself the same or differently in individuals and organisations? (Take a test to determine your individual unconscious bias at Project Implicit)
- When trying to change an organisation on an issue such as diversity, people at the top and the bottom are often supportive but messages may get lost in the middle. How do we engage the “messy middle”?
- How we do ensure both partners in global partnerships are on an equal footing, rather than having one leading the other?
Professor Chris Gallavin
Soon to embark on a poetry tour of the nation’s fish and chip shops, Professor Chris Gallavin is both a poet and Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Massey University.
He told the audience that education should not be about passing on information, but about “learning how to do things with the stuff we know”.
Professor Gallavin called for a more collaborative future, with education providers engaging with industry, politics and broader society to help solve the world’s problems.
“The revolution is coming, whether we like it or not, and it will be driven by young people,” he says.
“Universities need to change our view of how we see ourselves in the world, from bastions of knowledge to centres of collaboration.”

Industry experts shared their vision of sustainable school growth at NZIEC.
Why should students choose your school?
Dr Stephen Holmes, founder and Principal of The 5Rs Partnership, says the international school landscape is compelling for students.
He believes New Zealand schools will benefit from having clear, distinctive positioning.
“Find a cogent and compelling reason for your audiences to choose your school over others,” he says.
Stephen’s top tips include:
- Find your school’s intrinsic strengths rather than trying to be everything to everybody. “Don’t give me 50 reasons to choose you – give me three reasons to choose you.”
- Communicate substance – teaching, pedagogy, curriculum and staff.
- Back up your claims with evidence of the impact you have on students.
- Make sure staff are engaged with your messaging, so the rhetoric is backed up by the delivery.
- Focus on reputation and co-brands (affiliations, partnerships; who goes to your school).
- Word of mouth has more impact than traditional marketing. Parents, staff and former students are all important advocates.
How to promote internationalism
For John van der Zwan, Executive Director of SIEBA, internationalisation is a powerful driver for student recruitment and an essential element of future-focused education.
He says the aim of internationalisation is to help students become culturally competent and globally ready.
John believes internationalisation requires a commitment across all areas of the school, and should be embedded within teaching and learning.
The role of international staff in internationalisation, he says, is to:
- Support or coordinate cultural PLD (professional learning and development).
- Promote and lead cross-cultural activities.
- Write a paper for the board and school leaders.
- Be an advocate and make conversations happen.

An ENZ market intelligence webinar for Korea has been organised and registration is now open. It will offer local market updates and insights and share Immigration New Zealand updates.
Registration is also open for an ENZ market intelligence webinar focusing on the Japanese market. This will include local market updates and insights, 2020 dates and regional engagements and NZQA Amendments to the Code of Practice.
ENZ’s Director Asia, John Laxon, said the industry webinars will be a great opportunity for New Zealand education providers to receive local in-market intelligence from ENZ staff.
“This will ensure in-market recruitment efforts are well targeted. Our 2019 webinar series is providing market insights and updates from around the Asia region, taking into account strong industry interest in the 2018 series.”

Letter from the CE: Navigating our changing world
A huge thank you to all those who joined us in Auckland for 2019’s NZIEC. The conference was filled with fascinating presentations, promising new connections and enlightening discussions. It was, however, the collaborative spirit, warm reception and energy of those who attended and presented that made this year’s conference our best yet.
Like many sectors, we are now operating in a state of constant change in terms of students’ needs and wants – and the challenges and opportunities that stem from this was a focus of discussion across the three days of events. NZIEC’s keynote speakers – Guy Ryan, Dr Lisa Coleman, and Professor Chris Gallavin – presented an impressive range of perspectives and ideas across areas including youth leadership and the role of global connectedness, inclusion and diversity, and the value of working together across different sub-sectors.
Our environment is also changing. NZIEC 2019 followed an announcement by Minister of Education, Chris Hipkins, about reforms for vocational education in New Zealand. The reforms are intended to ensure the vocational education sector continues to be globally relevant as the nature of work and the skills required in the workplace shifts. Seven key changes will be made, the major one being the establishment of a single public network of vocational training institutes. I would like to reiterate the Minister’s reassurance that the changes will be introduced gradually over several years. International students can continue to enrol here with confidence, knowing we are in the process of making their education experience even better. At ENZ we are looking at the opportunities a strong national identity for New Zealand’s vocational training presents offshore.
Lastly, the conference was a chance to acknowledge our strong education relationship with Japan, our country of honour. The nation is the third-largest student source country for New Zealand’s international sector. In 2017, for example, we had 10,272 Japanese students study here. I am confident this relationship will continue to deepen with lots of activity planned in the year ahead.

New travel rules for NZ coming soon
From 1 October, some international visitors and transit passengers must have an NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority) before travelling to New Zealand.
The NZeTA is a new border security measure. It is not a visa and does not guarantee entry to New Zealand.
From 1 October 2019, travellers must have authority to travel to New Zealand. This means they must hold one of the following:
- An NZeTA (or an NZeTA exemption)
- A visa
- Citizenship of New Zealand or Australia.
What does this mean for international students?
People who are planning to come to New Zealand to complete a short-term course will need to apply for an NZeTA if they are coming from a visa waiver country. Friends and family planning to visit students in New Zealand will also need one, as well as education agents visiting on business.
International students who require a visa to study will not need an NZeTA.
Travel agents, student agents and schools can assist international students with applying for the NZeTA by downloading the NZeTA mobile app or visiting the Immigration New Zealand website.
There is a small fee attached: NZD$9 for mobile app requests and NZD$12 for website requests.
The only official way to request an NZeTA is through Immigration New Zealand. Travellers should be advised not to request an NZeTA through any unauthorised third party.

Global initiatives show the benefits of collaboration
New Zealand Ambassador to Thailand, Taha Macpherson, at the opening of the AUT/RMUTT Thai-New Zealand Centre.
Auckland University of Technology (AUT) is celebrating two new transnational educational initiatives.
Designed to share New Zealand’s unique education offering with the world, these new projects are the result of years of relationship-building.
AUT joined with Thailand’s prestigious Rajamangala University of Technology Thanyaburi (RMUTT) to open the AUT/RMUTT Thai-New Zealand Centre earlier this month.
Based at RMUTT’s Bangkok campus, the centre is dedicated to English language learning – for students, entrepreneurs and the general public. Eventually, this will enable more Thai students to study at English-speaking providers overseas.
Secondly, in early August, AUT became the first New Zealand university to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Tokyo Metropolitan Board of Education. This makes AUT the official institutional partner for the board’s new learning platform to promote inquiry-based learning to both students and teachers.
ENZ General Manager International, Lisa Futschek, describes these collaborative efforts as “significant milestones”.
“Transnational education initiatives like these ones not only raise the profile of New Zealand education overseas, but are crucial steps in New Zealand’s internationalisation journey,” she says.

Measles outbreak: information for international students
There is currently an outbreak of measles in New Zealand.
We encourage you to stay up-to-date with the latest advice and information on the measles outbreak by visiting the Ministry of Health’s website here.
Measles is a highly infectious airborne virus and one of the world’s most infectious diseases. It is important that international students get vaccinated at least two weeks before travelling to New Zealand. This allows time for the vaccine to build immunity.
For international students who are currently in New Zealand, it is important to know your vaccination status to know if you are immune. If you do not know your vaccination status, you may wish to ask someone at home to check with your healthcare provider.
It is extremely important to be up-to-date with measles immunisations. This protects the student, their community and anyone they may come into contact with – particularly small babies, pregnant women and others who cannot be vaccinated
One dose of MMR vaccine protects about 95 percent of people, and two doses protects about 99 percent of people. Two doses are necessary to prevent outbreaks.
It is important to note that the Ministry of Health is working closely with District Health Boards in New Zealand to manage the distribution of vaccine stock to ensure they are available to those who need them most. This means that first priority for MMR vaccinations is currently:
Auckland
- Ensuring all children receive their MMR vaccinations on time at 12 months and 4 years to maintain the national Childhood Immunisation Schedule
- Targeted community outreach managed by the three Auckland DHBs, namely groups who are most affected by the outbreak including 15-29 year olds and Pacific peoples within those groups.
Rest of New Zealand
- Ensure all children receive their vaccinations on time at 15 months and 4 years to maintain the national Childhood Immunisation Schedule
- Susceptible close contacts within 72 hours of first exposure to measles when possible.
Symptoms
Symptoms of measles include: a fever; cough; runny nose; sore and watery ‘pink’ eyes and a rash. People are contagious five days before and five days after the appearance of the rash, counting the day of rash onset as day one.
Advice if someone thinks they have measles:
- Stay away from work, school or public places
- Call Healthline on 0800 611 116, to inform them that you are experiencing symptoms of measles and that you may have come into contact with a measles case
- Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing and wash your hands frequently
- Minimise your contact with others to prevent infecting them
- Students should also make sure other people e.g. flatmates, friends, homestay families or hostel staff are aware they are unwell, so they can assist if needed.
Who shouldn’t get the vaccine?
You shouldn’t get immunised against measles if you:
- Are pregnant
- Have had an anaphylaxis reaction to MMR or are immunocompromised.
If a student thinks they have been exposed to measles and is unable to have the vaccine, they need to ask a doctor for advice.
Pregnant women who think they have measles, or have come in contact with someone with measles, must call their general practice or lead maternity carer as soon as possible. Pregnant women who were immunised against measles prior to becoming pregnant, are almost certainly protected.

Education New Zealand welcomes urgent changes to pastoral care for domestic students
ENZ Chief Executive Grant McPherson says, “The New Zealand education sector has long been recognised as leading the way in providing great pastoral care for international students, and we welcome the news that a code for domestic tertiary students will be introduced next year.”
New Zealand has had a compulsory Code of Pastoral Care for International Students since 2002. The Code provides an additional duty of care to provide assurance about the quality of the New Zealand system to prospective students and their families.
International students already have strong protections in place in the existing Code of Pastoral Care for International Students, including safety, wellbeing and accommodation and they will continue to be well supported to have an excellent experience while studying during 2020.
McPherson says international providers need to be aware of one important change that affects them. New offences and penalties introduced today will also apply to institutions enrolling international students. These offences and penalties are for severe breaches of the Code.
The interim domestic tertiary code will be in place from 1 January 2020 until 1 January 2021. Next year, the Government will develop a permanent Code of Practice with significant sector engagement to ensure it is enduring. This will provide an opportunity to address any gaps in the current Code of Pastoral Care for International Students, in time for 2021.
