    This survey is important to gauge ENZ’s performance and importantly, let us know how we’re doing, what services you value and what you’d like to see more of.   

    In last year’s survey, you highlighted several themes that we’ve been working to address. We heard that you need more advance notice of our global events to allow you to plan better. In response, we published our event calendar in November, covering events to be held in the last half of 2024. 

    You also said you wanted to see closer alignment between government agencies and the sector. As a result, we have worked with peak bodies and key government agencies to refresh the purpose of the quarterly Peak Body Forum and built a closer working relationship with the Alliance of Peak Bodies.  

    Other important themes included improving our engagement and integrating views of the sector in our planning, while providing more clarity on our range of services and support. We have provided more webinars ranging from showcasing the regions to the global agent network, through to leveraging research, data and analysis to provide you with targeted market insights 

    Peak body and sector representatives were involved early in our business planning, including market prioritisation, to ensure that we walk in step with the sector. 

    While we may not always get it right, you can rest assured that we are listening and continually striving to deliver the products and services that you value and help you to grow

  • Education opportunities feature in PM’s visit to India

    The delegation included representatives from the University of Waikato, University of Auckland, University of Canterbury, Media Design School, Ara Institute of Canterbury, Wellington Institute of Technology and Whitireia Community Polytechnic as well as Wellington film company Park Road Post Production.

    Education New Zealand Chief Executive, Grant McPherson, said the high quality of these providers made establishing partnerships very appealing to elite Indian institutions.

    “New Zealand provides important, desirable and often specialist education opportunities for Indian students, and the Government of India wants to see more active engagement in this area.”

    McPherson added that the agreements support a more focused approach to education promotion in India – the attraction of high quality Indian students to New Zealand. This was endorsed by Prime Minister Modi, who said he wants to see more Indian students studying in New Zealand.

    “With in-market briefings confirming that the profile of Indian students applying to study New Zealand has changed significantly over the last 12 months, New Zealand is well placed to build progressively on these changes.

    “The range of relationships and agreements announced support New Zealand’s repositioning in India, and this is what New Zealand needs for a successful and sustainable India student market.”

    Jenn Bestwick, Chair of Ara Institute of Canterbury (who made an agreement with India’s Kumaraguru College of Technology during the visit), said the institute was pleased with the education opportunities presented for both New Zealand and India.

    “The mission offered up insights from India's educational leaders on how, and where, they see value in partnering with New Zealand educational institutions.

    “We have an opportunity for Ara and other New Zealand institutions to ‘Think New’ in terms of how we approach this market for the mutual benefit of institutions and students in both New Zealand and India.”

    Key delegate announcements included:

    • A University of Otago agreement with the Bombay Stock Exchange Institute regarding  collaboration in finance and related programmes, and the facilitation of student mobility
    • A Media Design School partnership with the prestigious Pearl Academy, which will bring MDS’ expertise and programmes to the Indian market
    • An Ara Institute of Canterbury and Kumaraguru College of Technology’s (KCT) agreement to bring more than 10 KCT students to Ara’s Christchurch campus to participate in an Engineering Systems Analysis programme
    • ‘My New Zealand Future’ animation showcase winners will intern at Wellington Institute of Technology, Media Design School and Massey University, profiling New Zealand’s animation and design expertise
    • A strategic education partnership agreement between Universities New Zealand and the Maharashtra State Government, and development of an engagement strategy to strengthen relationships with India and attract more university students to New Zealand (read more here).

  • ENZ expands annual agent co-investment initiative for 2020

    Successful proposals have been selected, and co-investment activities are already underway in Latin America and Greater China. Activities include counsellor training, virtual campus tours and a new digital publication for prospective students.

    In the coming months, the selection process will begin in the Malaysia, Indonesia, Viet Nam, Thailand and Philippines markets.

    The selected education agencies will be running their co-investment activities between August and December, so that institutions are able to virtually attend activities or contribute information during what is usually the peak promotional season in-market.

    The initiatives recognise that although students are not being recruited to begin study in New Zealand now, they are seeking information for study destination decisions which begin years before their international study experience commences.

    ENZ’s agent co-investment initiatives promote a high quality student experience by supporting those agencies with proven high visa approval rates in our target markets, which is particularly important as students require transparent and reliable information on their study plans during COVID-19.

    “These initiatives are a wonderful way to support ENZ recognised agencies (ENZRA), and the ENZ team is intending to continue offering them in various markets to keep the New Zealand story alive and nurture existing relationships,” says ENZ Manager Education Agents, Geneviève Rousseau Cung.

    “They also supplement the global ENZ agent webinar updates being provided across all markets, and tailored ENZ workshops, seminars and training sessions for agents in priority markets.”

    China

    Education International Cooperation (EIC), one of the largest international education agencies in China, was one of the eight successful ENZRA agencies chosen by the selection panel as a partner in the Agent Co-Investment Initiative.

    One of the deliverables is a press conference and promotional campaign for the 2020 Study in New Zealand Report that includes data from an EIC-conducted survey and an analysis of EIC’s internal application data.

    The report is one of the first produced by a Chinese education agency and gives students and parents a clear guide to studying in New Zealand. EIC reported high praise from families and New Zealand institutions on the 2018 report, which is one of the motivations for continuing the research and press conference annually.

    “I believe the data will provide some important information and thinking for ENZ and New Zealand institutions, and strengthen the in-depth understanding of the Chinese market,” EIC Director of Australia & New Zealand – Division of Student Recruitment, Celia Liu, says.

    “To coincide with the release of this report, EIC will also invite New Zealand institutions to participate in promoting the virtual event on 12 September.”

    Latin America

    In Latin America, student interest in New Zealand has increased due to the excellent reputation gained since the beginning of the pandemic in March. In order to show our commitment to agents in-market, we’ve selected projects from 14 ENZRA agents: 

    • Five from Brazil (Australian Center, Information Planet, Up Study, Yazigi and YES)
    • Three from Chile (Global student, Hain y Viaja Estudia)
    • Six from Colombia (Babel Studies, Extudia, SEA, Student Connection and Viva en NZ)

    The activities proposed range from the creation of a digital magazine for prospective students, online campaigns to virtual events, all of which began in July and will end in September. Some projects are also supported by a New Zealand institution, for example, YES Intercâmbio from Brazil is working with Massey University and Southern Institute of Technology (SIT), and Hain Chile working together with AIS and Western Springs High School. 

    At this time of uncertainty, other initiatives that are part of the ENZ Agent Co-Investment include contingency plans to account for the changing international education landscape. ENZ’s team in Latin America remains in close contact with our agency partners around any proposed changes to the submitted plans to allow flexibility and support while maintaining the integrity of the ENZ Agent Co-Investment Initiative.

    “We are pleased to support and work with agents in these initiatives, which help to maintain the New Zealand education brand alive and relevant as we enter what is expected to be a hyper-competitive scenario in the next years,” ENZ Director of Education for Chile and Colombia, Javiera Visedo, says.

  • Malaysian students and NZ universities strengthen ties in series of education events

    From 13 to 20 May, the Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) team in Malaysia supported a series of international education events across the country. The activities were co-funded with education agencies and were organised to raise awareness of the quality of New Zealand’s universities and the breadth of education opportunities for Malaysian students.

    The initiative kicked-off with a series of education fairs held at MARA Colleges in Kuala Lumpur, Ledang, and Lenggong from 13 to 16 May. MARA (Majlis Amanah Rakyat) is the Malaysian Government Scholarship Provider and supports Malaysian students to pursue higher education at home or abroad. At these fairs, ENZ and participating New Zealand universities partnered with IDP to engage with diploma students from MARA who are looking to continue their bachelor's degrees overseas.

    ENZ followed this event by co-hosting another education fair in Kuala Lumpur with AECC Global Malaysia from 17 to 19 May. This event attracted approximately 100 enthusiastic students interested in pursuing undergraduate and postgraduate programmes at New Zealand universities.

    Prospective international students from East Malaysia were then offered the opportunity to learn more about studying in New Zealand at an information session in Kuching from 19 to 20 May. This session was held in collaboration with the city's leading education agency, MMS, and gave students valuable insights into New Zealand's academic landscape, empowering them with the knowledge to make informed decisions about their future education.

    ENZ’s Regional Director, Asia (excluding China) and Acting General Manager of International, Ben Burrowes, highlighted the importance of conducting such events in Malaysia. 

    “Running student recruitment activities like these in Malaysia are a core part of ENZ’s strategy to promote diversity within New Zealand’s international student community.  

    “They also serve to foster cultural exchange and mutual growth, strengthening the enduring ties between our nations that were originally established through the Colombo Plan,” said Ben.  

    ENZ’s Market Manager for Indonesia and Malaysia, Naluri Bella, added that it was positive to see so much interest in learning more about studying in New Zealand from students right across the country.  

    “In an effort to broaden the reach of our recruitment efforts, ENZ and agents also connected with international schools in Malaysia. Our PR activity also gained traction with local media who shared details of our information sessions. 

    “This approach really underscores our commitment to fostering educational exchanges and facilitating pathways for Malaysian students to pursue higher education in New Zealand,” said Naluri.

    Australia  

    An IDP survey finds that reactions are varied across key student sending markets to Australia’s tighter immigration rules and higher financial requirements and visa fees. The findings suggest, however, that increased financial requirements and application fees could influence the study plans of half (or more) of prospective students 

    India 

    In its first full budget since coming to power for the third term, the Modi government has focused on some major funding allocations for different areas in India’s education sector  

    Malta 

    International students are turning to Malta for study opportunities – in part due to a scheme that allows them to earn back the majority of their tuition fees once they start working. 

    Nepal 

    Study visa issuance to Nepalese citizens has grown in three of the top four English-speaking destinations. 

    United States 

    The Biden-Harris administration in the US has announced actions to speed up visa processing for college graduates who hold job offers, sending a positive signal for prospective international students.  

  • Supporting PTEs to grow internationally

    The recent 2024 ITENZ Conference in September provided the ideal platform for Sharon-May McCrostie, Acting General Manager of Sector Engagement for Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) to highlight some of ENZ’s work to support Private Training Establishments (PTEs) 

    Strengthening New Zealand’s reputation as a preferred destination for international students studying with PTEs by taking a collaborative approach with the subsector has been key, said Sharon-May. 

    This includes how ENZ works with PTEs to develop the subsector by organising roadshows, in-market education fairs, events and webinars. We also have a strong pipeline of activity ahead, working with PTEs through strategic marketing, partnerships, capability building, with a focus on delivering high-quality educational experiences,” added Sharon-May.

    During her presentation, Sharon-May highlighted four key points:

    • Expanding recruitment efforts in key markets such as India, China, Viet Nam, Latin America, and the Philippines, will be incredibly important in the diversification of the international student base. This will also be vital in achieving the New Zealand government’s goal to double export earnings from international education to $4.4 billion by 2027 and meeting the student enrolment target of 85,000 by 2024/25 (up from 69,000). 
    • ENZ conducts targeted marketing campaigns that aim to boost visibility and awareness of a New Zealand education. Providers can leverage ENZ marketing support in their international journey through tools like BrandLab for developing promotional materials and AgentLab for connecting with education agents. 
    • ENZ provides valuable market insights through IntelliLab, offering data on trends, student preferences, and enrolment statistics to help providers make informed decisions. 
    • Lastly, to improve the student experience, ENZ provides resources such as NauMai NZ and conducts an annual Student Experience Survey, giving providers insights into how they can better meet the needs of international students. 

    Sharon-May ended by confirming ENZ’s commitment to the subsector. 

    “We are committed to providing ongoing support for PTE providers through research, resource and capability building.  We look forward to continuing our efforts in supporting the growth of this very important part of New Zealand’s international education eco-system,” said Sharon-May. 

  • Online visa application update

    Immigration ONLINE – Student will allow international students around the world to apply, pay fees and upload supporting documents online. The new service will be available to full fee paying, scholarship, exchange and English language students.

    Student applicants will still need to provide passports. This can be done offshore through Visa Application Centres or, if the applicant is already in New Zealand, through the INZ Palmerston North office.

    Apply on behalf of functionality – for INZ’s third party partners such as immigration advisers, education agents and education providers – is now set to go live in 2015. Later this year INZ will provide more specifics around the delivery timing in 2015.

    While the new system provides international students with a new way to apply for their visas, it does not affect existing services. All current student visa processes remain.

    Education agents can continue to use current methods of applying on behalf of applicants, and information about Immigration ONLINE – Student is being made available to agents so they can continue to give advice about application options to prospective student.

  • Summer plans: what students need to know

    Under current border settings, tertiary-level international students will need to make careful and informed decisions about their plans for the summer period.

    Any international student who chooses to return home (or otherwise leave New Zealand) over the summer break needs to be aware that they are not eligible to re-enter the country to continue study in early 2021 under current border settings. Students facing hardship will need to reconsider whether they should continue to stay in New Zealand or are better to return home.

    International students currently in New Zealand who intend to continue to study in 2021 have the following options at the end of this academic year: 

    • Remain here over the break and continue their New Zealand study next year
    • Find additional summer school study programmes
    • Return home and continue their New Zealand study online next year, if their institution supports this option
    • Return home and cease their New Zealand study.

    Study providers are asked to ensure they are familiar with their ongoing Code obligations over the summer period, and to assist students to understand their options.

    Education New Zealand wants to complement and spread the word about the excellent work the sector and regional economic development agencies are all currently undertaking.

    We are also mindful that remaining in New Zealand will bring challenges for students and so supporting student connection and wellbeing is also a focus over this time.

    At ENZ we are:

    • Creating new NauMai NZ pages, specifically aimed towards keeping students in New Zealand over the summer.
      • The aim of these pages is to provide a central repository of activities and opportunities, addressing key themes of study, recreation, skill development, and connection with other students.
      • They will signpost out to activity happening at a regional and national level, as well as highlighting ENZ-led online initiatives.
      • These pages will be live at the end of September
    • Hosting a Summer in NZ online virtual fair for international students in NZ on 31 October, where regions and contributing organisations will have a chance to showcase summer activities that they are developing and delivering. Students will be able to register via NauMai NZ at the beginning of October.
    • Activating a variety of communications channels to direct students to NauMai NZ and the Summer in NZ fair to maximise awareness of summer opportunities and to gently encourage consideration of further study to those whose programmes may be finishing.
    • Facilitating online events and opportunities to support student wellbeing and connection over the summer period.

    We look forward to showcasing the fantastic experiences for students here in New Zealand over summer 2020/2021, building their capability, and supporting their wellbeing and connection to Aotearoa New Zealand. Further information will be available in the coming weeks.

  • From the Chief Executive: Greater clarity for 2022

    The past couple of years have undoubtedly been tough. Despite this, we’ve worked together to provide additional support for current students, diversify programmes and services, strengthen relationships, build social licence, and maintain a presence in our key markets.  

    Our immediate focus now is on making best possible use of key steps in the government’s five-step plan to progressively reopen the borders: 

    • Fourth cohort of up to 5,000 international students as a border exception (step 3), with visa processing from mid-April in time for students to start their studies here in July
    • Up to 3 months for visitors to come from visa-waiver countries (step 4) by July  
    • Visa applications open for all international students by October, in time for students to arrive at the start of the 2023 year. 

    Government decisions have now been made on the composition of the fourth cohort of students. Student numbers will be allocated across the sector, based on the proportion of international students who were attending each type of education provider pre-COVID in 2019:

    • University 1,450
    • Te Pūkenga 700
    • School (Year 9 and above) 1,000
    • PTE 850
    • English Language School 1,000

    Students will need to meet the same living cost requirements as the previous cohort, namely funds of $15,000 for school students and $20,000 for other students.

    Over the coming weeks, we will work closely with peak bodies, education providers and the Ministry of Education, to finalise the allocation of these places to individual providers.  In this respect, we have been able to set up an online system that should streamline the application process, and you will hear more about this soon.

    At the same time, we are continuing to work towards the overarching goals set out in the International Education Strategy:

    • Delivering an excellent education and student experience
    • Achieving sustainable growth
    • Developing global citizens.

    In this month’s E-News, you can read about our participation at the Dubai Expo, as well as two key upcoming events in Oman and Saudi Arabia related to tertiary education: Global Higher Education Exhibition Oman from 27 to 29 March 2022, and the International Conference & Exhibition for Education in Riyadh from 8 to 11 May 2022.

    As a reminder, other major education conferences in the first half of the year include APAIE 2022 from 27 to 31 March, which will be held online, FAUBAI 2022 which will be held online from 25 to 27 April, and NAFSA which will be held online from 4 to 5 May 2022 and in person in Denver, Colorado from 31 May to 3 June 2022.

  • Think New in translation

    The Brand Lab online marketing toolkit run by Education New Zealand (ENZ) for industry users now includes over 200 individual pieces of marketing material in these languages: Chinese, Thai, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean and Vietnamese. 

    That means there are translated versions of 11 posters, 3 brochures, various advertisement templates and the ‘New Zealand education story’ videos (subtitled).

    ENZ International Marketing Director Rachel Winkel says the translations truly internationalise the Think New brand, introduced in 2013. 

    “The brand and its supporting materials were designed to better promote New Zealand education internationally. The idea behind developing these resources is to build awareness of New Zealand education internationally – who we are and what we offer as a country – which paves the way for you to introduce your school, university, business or institution and its distinctive strengths in more detail.”

    Rachel Winkel says the translation project was “quite a big” undertaking that is expected to markedly strengthen the value of the free marketing toolkit to industry users. 

    “The Brand Lab is already proving really useful to education organisations. We have over 1,100 registered users now, and that is steadily rising every month, along with the number of downloads of materials from the site.

    “It is great to see lots of the ‘Think New’ material in use at fairs and in other recent marketing initiatives by industry – it means we are building a shared foundation of awareness of New Zealand as a ‘go to’ education destination.”  

    Having translated material available was the obvious next step for The Brand Lab, she says. 

    “It’s all about making it easy for education institutions and agents to reach out to audiences in their own languages.”

    Phase two of the translation project is underway, involving the creation of digital assets for different markets, in the form of web banners in a range of popular sizes.

    The Brand Lab use is free for organisations involved in New Zealand international education.
