ENZ roadshow heading to South America in 2025!
The South American region has significant potential to grow international student numbers to New Zealand. ENZ is excited to help facilitate this growth with a series of agent-facing events in Bogota, Colombia, São Paulo, Brazil, and Santiago, Chile.
Representatives from all New Zealand's education subsectors are invited to participate, with New Zealand Private Training Establishments (PTEs) and English Language Schools (ELS) particularly encouraged, seeing as both subsectors have been identified as having significant opportunities for growth in this region in ENZ's 2024/25 Business Plan.
The events offer New Zealand providers the opportunity to deliver presentations to local education agents, meet with them one-on-one, and network at a closing function.
ENZ's Director of Engagement for Latin America, Javiera Visedo, said that these seminars will offer a great opportunity for New Zealand institutions to reconnect with high performing South American education agents.
“In 2023, we had 3,124 students from Latin America studying in New Zealand which is a 68% increase from 2022 but a long way off pre-Covid levels,” said Javiera.
She added “in organising this series of events for early next year, we want to to keep facilitating the ongoing connection of New Zealand’s providers with key agents in the region, putting New Zealand front of mind as they assist students in their international study decision making processes".

ENZ reflections on NZIEC KI TUA 2024
ENZ’s Acting Director International, Ben Burrowes summed his experience up succinctly and said....
“As always, I found the conference to be an awesome opportunity to connect face-to-face with my colleagues and friends across the sector. It was hugely helpful to discuss (in-person) their areas of focus and how we can continue to align ENZ’s International team’s work alongside them”.

“It was wonderful to see so many colleagues from across the global international education sector connecting with each other over the 2 ½ days of NZIEC KI TUA. Attendees and speakers brought a global approach to thoughts and reflections and was a reminder of the environment within which we’re working. The extended networking breaks saw much cross-sector collaboration and sharing of good practice.
“The attendance and speech by the President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, was a great honour – the President reflected on the importance of international education for communities as well as the individual, how transformative education has been for her during her life, and the value of Indian international students in NZ,” said Sahinde.
“Dr Fanta Aw was a crowd favourite, with her reflections on the complimentary nature of international education alongside domestic education and the opportunity for us to collaborate globally given the societal value it brings to our communities and countries.
“My absolute highlight is always the student speakers, who threw down the wero (challenge) to delegates to keep focused on the importance of striving to deliver an excellent student experience,” Sahinde added.
I’m really proud of the whole ENZ whānau who collaborated to put on yet another successful NZIEC KI TUA”.

Adrian Hirst, ENZ’s Director of Marketing, spoke passionately about the challenge of standing out in the competitive international education market. His words resonated with me: “In a sea of competing destinations, it’s increasingly difficult to stand out.” It really made me think about the importance of creating a unique identity that speaks to prospective students and their families," said Wendy.
"Christina Gomes, our Director of Innovation and Growth, shared an exciting framework that aligns global demand with New Zealand’s strengths. I was particularly drawn to her insights on the agri-food sector, which highlighted New Zealand's expertise and global reputation. This provides an anchor to develop our unique identity and secure additional learners by targeting a new segment".
Wendy added, "Tim Brown introduced a new “mixed reality” tool designed to immerse prospective students in the New Zealand agri-food systems career opportunities and study experience".
"I left the conference feeling energised and hopeful about these initiatives, knowing they could accelerate how we attract additional international students and showcase the incredible opportunities that New Zealand offers. It was a reminder of the exciting future ahead for our education sector!" -

Clarifying visa process for students sees launch of video guide
ENZ General Manager Marketing and Communications Geoff Bilbrough said the video would support those considering study in New Zealand.
“As we get closer to the end of the year and the peak period for student visa applications it was important to get this information out early and help the students considering New Zealand understand what is involved in the application process.”
The video outlines what applicants can do to make sure their application is able to be processed as quickly as possible. These include:
- checking the student visa information sheet on the INZ website to make sure a good quality application is submitted that includes all the evidence and supporting documents needed to process the application
- demonstrating that applicants can comfortably afford to study in New Zealand. New Zealand has a thorough funds assessment and INZ looks for genuine sources of funds that are credible and can be verified. If INZ cannot verify funds or is not satisfied that any verification would be genuine, then the application will be declined.
It aims to make sure the students understand the requirements before applying.INZ receives the highest volumes of student visa applications between October and March. Applications generally take longer to be decided during this peak period, so it is important that anyone who is wanting to come to New Zealand to study next year applies early.
“If you want to study in New Zealand next year, INZ recommend applying three months before you intend to travel. This gives you the best chance of having your application decided in time,” Bilbrough said.
The video is available on Study with New Zealand the official Government website giving information for students considering studying in New Zealand. ENZ will also be promoting the video on social media in all key markets and making it available to education agents.

Sector support needed for the 2024 International Student Expenditure Survey
Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao (ENZ) will soon be collecting data for the next International Student Expenditure Survey and is seeking sector support to ensure it gains an accurate picture of international students' expenditure while they study in New Zealand.
This survey is important to the future of New Zealand’s international education sector as it enables us to tell the story of the value to New Zealand, to each sector and to each region. It gathers information on international student travel (including visiting friends and family) and spending from a national survey of student expenditure.
The last survey was undertaken in 2018 and over 5000 responses were received. Since then, that data has since been put to multiple uses, including informing the quarterly Statistics NZ Education Trade Services number as well as a range of other student and regional valuations.
ENZ’s Director of Insights, Marie Clark, ran an information session on the upcoming survey last week. The session covered:

Does it matter if New Zealand wasn’t a student’s #1 choice? Join the Insights and Student Experience teams and find out!
In this session, Director of Insights, Marie Clark, Insights Analyst, Dr Tom Vardy, and Student Experience Manager, Ross Crosson, will give an overview of the key findings of the survey and will also exclusively preview our deep dive into the questions on decision making and country choice. Answering the question: Does it matter if New Zealand wasn’t an international student’s first choice?
In the 2024 International Student Experience Survey, students lifted their positive rating of their experience to 86 percent, two percent higher than the previous year. In addition, the number of students who rated their experience as “excellent” lifted eight percent to 41 percent. As many education providers are looking to take advantage of new opportunities, this webinar is an important first chance to identify what additional support for international students may be required for the 2025 academic year.

ENZ staffing changes in Washington, D.C
On Friday 27 September Amy Rutherford, our Regional Director – Americas, the Middle East, and Europe and Counsellor (Education), will be finishing after eleven and a half years at ENZ.
Amy started at ENZ in 2013 as an International Market Manager for China. She has been in Washington, D.C. since 2018, having been in Los Angeles prior to that as ENZ’s Director of Education, North America. Prior to working for ENZ, Amy studied in the United States as an undergraduate student and worked for the University of Otago in the North American and European markets, as well as the New Zealand Resident Director for a US study abroad provider, the Institute for Study Abroad (IFSA).
“As a colleague of Amy’s in the International team, I’ve greatly appreciated Amy’s knowledge and expertise and I know she has built of wide network of trusted colleagues across New Zealand’s international education sector,” Acting General Manager Ben Burrowes said.
Ben added, “on behalf of ENZ, it is my privilege to congratulate Amy on an outstanding tenure at our organisation and we wish her well for the next step in her professional career”.
ENZ’s Regional Director - Americas, Middle East and Europe, Amy Rutherford (centre) will be finishing with ENZ on Friday 27 September. Associate Director of Engagement – North America, Natalie Lulia (left), will be acting in the role from Monday 30 November.
We are delighted that Natalie Lulia, currently Associate Director of Engagement – North America, will step into the role of Acting Regional Director - Americas, Middle East and Europe on Monday 30 September.
"Natalie has been a fantastic addition to ENZ and steps into the role at a particularly important time as we implement our 2024 – 2027 business strategy,” Mr Burrowes said.
Natalie first joined ENZ in October 2023. Prior to ENZ, she was Director – Māori for the Centres of Asia-Pacific Excellence (CAPE) and Strategic Advisor, International Indigenous Development at Te Whare Wānanga o Waikato - University of Waikato. There, she led a team passionate about Māori business capability, Global Citizenship Education and raising awareness to establish meaningful relationships in the Asia-Pacific, particularly with indigenous communities.
