  • ENZ builds agricultural links in Brazil

    The agencies were the Confederation of Agriculture and Livestock in Brazil (CNA, the Brazilian equivalent of Federated Farmers of New Zealand) and the National Service for Rural Learning (SENAR). Similar to New Zealand institutions, both agencies see innovation and technology as a key part of higher education, and value practical learning.

    The CNA Technical University is focussed entirely on the agriculture sector, and has the highest evaluations from the Ministry of Education. It is now looking to partner with New Zealand education providers to internationalise their programmes. Distance learning also plays an important role at CNA.

    SENAR operates in a slightly different way. Without physical classrooms, SENAR technicians take training and knowledge offsite to farms throughout Brazil, studying problems with clients directly and offering solutions and support. Technicians work with each client for two years, with the goal to make them independent of SENAR’s support. Courses can be from the most basic level such as hygiene, to management issues such as how to manage water and soil resources.

    ENZ’s Senior Market Development Manager – Brazil, Ana Azevedo, says New Zealand’s reputation in the agricultural sector, combined with the practical approach of New Zealand institutions, means providers such as these are eager to build partnerships with us.

    “Because CNA only offers agricultural studies, they are looking to partner with institutions who share their focus. This is where New Zealand has an advantage, as our reputation as leaders in the agricultural industry, combined with our practical hands-on education system makes New Zealand a very attractive study destination for young Brazilians in this field.”

    Following the meeting, CNA has offered to contact ENZ with partnership ideas to present to New Zealand institutions. We will aim to build on these discussions in the coming months for tangible results.

  • Iran trade visit seals breakthrough deal for New Zealand universities

    The visit secured several major education outcomes, including a ministerial announcement that the University of Canterbury, Victoria University of Wellington and Massey University would be reclassified as ‘excellent’ by the Iranian Ministry of Science, Research and Technology. These universities will join the University of Auckland and University of Otago, who have already been given the top ranking. These classifications play a significant role in guiding Iranian students in choosing where to study abroad. All of New Zealand’s universities are now classified in the top two categories.

    A higher education co-operation agreement was also signed between Ministers, which provides a platform for increased academic and research co-operation between the two countries.

    ENZ arranged several university recruitment events as part of the visit programme. Some 80 per cent of Iranian students in New Zealand are studying at PhD level. ENZ Chair Charles Finny, who led the education delegates on the visit, said this is a key area to build on.

    “These initiatives will significantly boost our universities’ recruitment of Iranian students, particularly at the PhD level,” said Mr Finny.

    “I look forward to New Zealand universities making the most of this opportunity in the coming years, and commend the University of Auckland, University of Canterbury and Auckland University of Technology for participating in this ground-breaking visit.”

  • US institutions tour New Zealand ITPs

    Despite a shaky start to the week, the US visitors undertook a successful study tour which involved visiting six ITPs: Unitec Institute of Technology, Waikato Institute of Technology, Wellington Institute of Technology, Ara Institute of Canterbury, Otago Polytechnic and Southern Institute of Technology.

    ENZ funded the IAPP as part of an agreement with IIE and was designed to focus on professional and vocational education (PAVE).

    ENZ Director of Education - North America, Amy Rutherford said the US institutions had gained a solid understanding of the ITP sector during the study tour, as well as the unique offerings of each institution and potential areas for collaboration.

    “Historically, ITPs have not had much interaction with US institutions, but ENZ’s presence in the US coupled with the support of US-based organisations like IIE will help develop PAVE collaboration,” said Rutherford.

    The IAPP is designed to help develop partnerships between US institutions and institutions abroad. The programme began in April this year with a series of webinars involving New Zealand ITPs and US institutions, and will finish with development of strategic relationships between the New Zealand and US institutions in 2017.

    US representatives from Hawaii, California, Michigan and Pennsylvania were particularly interested in how ITPs work with their communities, engage with industry and schools, and develop curriculum offerings to meet the needs of the local economy. They were also impressed with the breadth of ITPs’ internationalisation goals and successes, and the strong Māori cultural links of each institution.

  • ACG expands its New Zealand vocational group

    ACG Group Chief Executive, John Williamson, said that acquisitions are part of ACG’s plan to broaden its portfolio of high-quality educational services.

    “With ongoing demand for recognised, quality educational qualifications, we are well positioned to grow, either through developing new offerings ourselves or acquiring providers whose philosophies and standards match ours,” said Williamson.

    ACG’s vocational diplomas, degrees and courses are offered in a range of creative industries such as IT, tourism and hospitality, trades and services, health, and early childhood. The acquisitions will now see ACG delivering education to over 12,000 students through its 35 campuses across three countries.

    ACG’s other institutions include Yoobee School of Design, New Zealand Management Academies, New Zealand School of Tourism and New Zealand Career College.

    Animation College is New Zealand's leading character animation college, delivering both traditional and 3D animation courses. AMES is one of New Zealand’s top IT education providers, while South Seas Film & Television School is a leading film, television, screen acting, animation and photography training institution.

  • South America webinars a success

    Last week, the ENZ South America team organised the first New Zealand Regional Webinars Marathon for education agents in South America, sharing information about education, tourism, economy and local industries from around New Zealand.

    The webinars were presented by representatives from regional organisations and hosted by ENZ. Javiera Visedo, ENZ’s Senior Market Development Manager Colombia and Chile said webinars are an effective and low cost marketing tool that allows them to provide training for agents without moving from their desks.

    “Agents are not able to attend all the education fairs, which can also be a big piece of work for our team. The webinars are a great way to solve both those issues, and allows us to connect with agents across the region without having to hold an in-person event,” said Javiera.

    “In a large region like ours, we need to be creative!”

    The sessions focussed on cities such as Dunedin, Wellington, Rotorua, Christchurch and Queenstown, presented by regional representatives Margo Reid of Study Dunedin, Christine Pugh of Grow Wellington, Meri Gibson of Rotorua Education, Karen Haigh of Christchurch Educated and Aaron Halstead of Study Queenstown.

    The South American team said the webinars were a great success with more than 1,000 registrations and nearly 650 attendances - an average of 130 agents per session.

    The majority of participants were from Brazil and Colombia, the largest markets in the region, though agents from Argentina, Peru and Ecuador also took part, reflecting a large interest in New Zealand education from the region.

  • ENZ hosts Kiwi orientation for Tokyo students

    ENZ hosted an orientation for 33 high school students about to embark on a year of study in New Zealand at the New Zealand Embassy in Tokyo last Friday. 

    From education to lifestyle, representatives from ENZ and MFAT spoke to the students about everything New Zealand has to offer.

    The students are part of the “Next Generation Leadership” programme organised by the Tokyo Metropolitan Board of Education. Under this programme, some 200 high school students in Tokyo are selected annually to receive scholarships for one year of study in the US, Canada, Australia – and as of this year, New Zealand, which will receive 40 students starting February.

    The New Zealand study orientation included an interactive Q&A session discussing pathways to New Zealand universities (including ITP and PTE options), outdoor activities available in New Zealand and how computers and technology are incorporated in the classroom. One student made a speech in English during the day, expressing her excitement for her adventures in New Zealand.

    Ahead of Japan’s hosting of the 2019 Rugby World Cup and 2020 Olympics, the Tokyo Metropolitan Board of Education has been busy working with the city’s school sector to promote international education and student exchange.

    To further strengthen its relationship with the Board, ENZ will be securing a new partnership under the Arrangement on Education Cooperation. The partnership is set to be signed by ENZ and the Board next month with a reception to be held at the New Zealand Embassy in Tokyo.

    Misa Pitt, ENZ’s Senior Market Development Manager – Japan, said the partnership with the Board of Education in the nation’s capital is a significant milestone for ENZ Japan.

    “This partnership will provide a fantastic opportunity for us to promote future expansion of the existing student/teacher training programme in New Zealand as well as to support the Board’s new initiative on inbound student recruitment to Japan.

    “We look forward to working with SIEBA, English New Zealand and other groups to introduce the exciting new programmes available in New Zealand.”

  • Kiwi scholars tour India

    Eight business students from Ara Institute of Canterbury and 20 fashion, textile and business students from Massey University are currently spending four to six weeks in India. The PMSA programme is funded by the New Zealand government and encourages New Zealand students to study in Asia to experience the benefits of international education.

    John Laxon, ENZ’s Regional Director – South East Asia and Middle East, said the PMSA reinforces the New Zealand Government’s commitment to India and our education relationship.

    “These scholarships build on New Zealand’s status as a top destination for Indian students, creating partnerships with prestigious Indian education institutions and between the future leaders of both countries.”

    As part of the PMSA programme, eight of Ara’s business school scholars will spend six weeks attending a series of classroom lectures at Jaipuria Institute of Management in Noida and KCT Business School in Coimbatore to develop a better understanding of the business environment in India. This will focus on aspects like entrepreneurship and the Indian rural economy. While in India, they will also visit local business establishments including dairies, textile mills and start-ups.

    In January, ENZ hosted the Ara students at the New Zealand High Commission for an interactive session about New Zealand’s relationship with India, and the engagement opportunities available. The session was chaired by Acting High Commissioner Suzannah Jessep, and was also attended by faculty members from Jaipuria and Ara Institute.

    Following this, ENZ also hosted a project presentation at the New Zealand High Commission called ‘Closing the Loop’ for the Massey awardees, based on India’s circular economy strategy to phase out land filling of recyclable materials by 2025.

    The Massey students teamed up with 20 creative arts students from National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), New Delhi, to produce an outfit made from sustainable and organic materials sourced in India.

    Students worked in groups mixing their textile, fashion and business talents, and even created a sustainable ‘business plan’ to accompany their outfits. The High Commission lawns were then transformed into a makeshift runway for the students to showcase their garments to the senior faculty members from Massey and NIFT in attendance. 

    Sue Prescott, Senior Lecturer and Major Coordinator for Fashion Design at Massey University said the event highlighted the potential for fashion to address real world issues such as over-consumption, global warming and ethical production processes.

    “Through studies in fashion supply chain, traditional fashion industry methods are challenged, and team design and production projects like this help lead to innovative and sustainable thinking.”

  • US students: Adventurers and Future Makers

    When talking to American students, Lewis found that most held positive views of New Zealand, but lacked any specific details of what study in New Zealand involved. It got him thinking about the four international student personas and, for the most part, Lewis said US study abroad students fall into two categories – Adventurers and Future Makers.

    “Adventurers are students who see study abroad as an opportunity to experience new things and places, and to have fun while learning more about themselves,” explained Lewis.

    “Most of my time with these students was spent mapping out the closest mountains to their university of choice, or explaining how to road trip around the country.“Adventurers are students who see study abroad as an opportunity to experience new things and places, and to have fun while learning more about themselves,” explained Lewis.

    “They’re an easy sell for New Zealand but there were a number of other students who weren’t as convinced.”

    Lewis believes this second group of students are in the Future Maker category. For them, career outcomes are top of mind, and education is seen as the road to get there. Lewis said these students were concerned that New Zealand’s appeal to thrill-seekers meant that the academic components wouldn’t be up to standard.

    “For these students, study abroad is a serious opportunity. Beautiful pictures of Fiordland aren’t enough – they need cold, hard facts of New Zealand’s high quality education.

    “Because of the perception of New Zealand as a place for outdoor adventure, many students were surprised to hear that they could study subjects like mechanical engineering, IT or physiotherapy in New Zealand, and that all universities ranked in the top 3% in the world.

    “They also had many enquiries about internship opportunities and programmes that combine study and work experience.”

    Lewis also saw that alumni play a  powerful role in this market.

    "At one fair, alumni from the University of Southern California were key in piquing the interest of their fellow students, sharing that their courses in New Zealand were cross-credited, and that the Tongariro crossing was just as beautiful as the pictures.

    “That’s the balance needed – students who are able to attest to both the academic rigour of courses in New Zealand and the adventure opportunities.”

  • International education adds value across New Zealand

    The reports follow theEconomic Impact of International Education 2015/16 released in November 2016. While that research looked at the New Zealand-wide picture, the latest reports, commissioned by ENZ, detail mean living costs and tuition fees, the number of jobs supported and contribution to GDP in specific regions – covering Northland, Bay of Plenty (including Tauranga and Rotorua), Taranaki, Manawatu-Whanganui, Hawke’s Bay, Nelson Marlborough, Otago (including Dunedin and Queenstown) and Southland.

    As well as economic gain, the social and cultural benefits of international education have also been felt across the country – among students, teachers, families, businesses and communities.

    MetOcean Solutions, a Taranaki-based company specialising in oceanography and marine forecasting, has found enormous help in Mariana, an international student from Brazil. Dr Malene Felsing, MetOcean Solutions Science Communications, said Mariana’s cultural insights have been a big help for the company, which exports to South America.

    “Having Mariana on hand to tell us about the culture there, what kind of marketing people respond to, and how to foster relationships has been very helpful – and the fact that she speaks Portuguese is an added bonus,” said Felsing.

    In Whanganui, Rosie Austin, Director of International Students at Whanganui Collegiate School, said international students contribute to the wider community as well as within the school.

    “As members of the school choir, youth orchestra and jazz band, our international students are out and about performing for the local community. Some play in the Whanganui Orchestra, one has been invited to play in the New Zealand Junior Symphony Orchestra, and another in the recent International Flute symposium in Christchurch.”

    In Tauranga, Janelle and Brendan Mark are one of countless host families who welcome international students into their home each year. The Marks are currently hosting Aki, a 16-year-old from Japan, who Janelle and Brendan’s children, aged 8 and 12, particularly enjoy having in the home.

    “Aki has already taught them some Japanese and how to make origami," said Janelle.

    “She is a big part of our family and is going to be a hard one to let go of at the airport in December. Though I have no doubt we’ll do it again next year. It is a huge responsibility taking care of someone else’s child, but it’s a wonderful and rewarding experience.”

  • International students welcomed to Wellington

    Proceedings began with a rousing Kapa Haka performance from Whitirea performing arts students. This was followed by a warm welcome from Wellington Mayor, Justin Lester, who reflected fondly on his time as an international student in both Germany and Japan.

    After the formalities, there were lots of fun activities, including giant games, a national dress competition, poi making and the opportunity to take photos in booths or with a life-sized Gandalf.

    Local tertiary education providers and tertiary student ambassadors were on-hand to answer questions.

    Chinese International student, Raymond Chen, said he loved the event and was enjoying life as a Year 12 student at Scots College.

    “We are like brothers at Scots College. And my homestay family in Miramar make me part of their family. We do all sorts of things like going to their friends’ house or camping. I really enjoy being with them.”

    Education New Zealand is one of a number of agencies the Wellington Regional Economic Development Agency is working with on the multi-year Wellington International Student Growth Programme (WISGP).
