New video showcases a day in the life of a Follow the Kiwi scholar from Italy
ENZ’s new promotional video for the Italy market features Gaia Leidi, the Italian recipient of the 2018 Follow the Kiwi Scholarship, who is studying at Kerikeri High School.
Sixteen-year-old Gaia is from Busto Arsizio, a small town near Milan. In the video, Gaia talks about how Kiwi schools’ practical approach to creative subjects such as art, design and performing art technologies was the reason she chose a New Zealand school. She talks about her “challenging” maths and science classes in New Zealand – an important aspect for parents used to the rigorous Italian system – and highlights the friendly and supportive relationship she has with her teachers and her “amazing” host family in New Zealand.

Gaia’s rich New Zealand education experience made her a great choice to feature in ENZ’s ‘A Day in the Life’ video for the Italy market.
ENZ Market Development Manager – Europe, Olga Elli said Gaia’s video provided another valuable resource to encourage more students from Italy (and elsewhere in Europe) to look at what New Zealand has to offer.
“We will also use it as part of our promotion efforts for the next Follow the Kiwi scholarship campaign, to be launched in September this year,” Olga said.
ENZ’s focus on the high schools sector in Italy over the last two years, working closely with education agents and the Italian Association of Language Consultants and Agents (IALCA), has helped to raise awareness of New Zealand as an education destination, leading to an increase in the number of Italian students in New Zealand high schools to around 370 in 2018.
2019 Agent Promotion Fund awards funds to eight education agencies in Europe
ENZ awarded a total of €16,000 to eight education agencies in France, Germany and Italy in the 2019 Agent Promotion Fund round.
The fund supports creative and innovative projects that promote New Zealand as a world-leading study destination. Applications needed to align with ENZ’s strategic objectives in each of the three markets: from growing university numbers and building research and governmental links in France and Germany; to strengthening promotion of New Zealand’s regions; to focusing on the high schools sector across all three countries.
The fund was a great way for ENZ to tap into the expertise, networks and local knowledge of education agents in each of these markets in Europe, Olga said.
“Education agents play a key role in student recruitment in Europe. The winning proposals – four from Germany, and two each from France and Italy – cover a wide range of promotional activities, including social media and digital campaigns, scholarships, and student recruitment fairs and roadshows.”

What Kiwi employers value in New Zealand-educated international graduates
A new research report published by ENZ looks into Kiwi employers from small to medium-sized (SME) businesses to show what they most value in New Zealand-educated international graduates.
The report, Employer Perceptions of Hiring International Graduates, was launched today at the Global Internship Conference, hosted by the University of Auckland.
The research looked into the hiring practices, pressures and opportunities for employers from SME businesses, which make up 97 percent of enterprise in New Zealand.
ENZ Chief Executive Grant McPherson said the research identified two key areas of New Zealand-educated international graduates’ value to Kiwi SMEs.
“One was the keen attitude of international graduates, which is defined as positively contributing to work outputs; and the graduates’ multicultural energy, which is seen as positively contributing to workplace morale,” McPherson said.
Characteristics associated with a keen attitude include perseverance, earned success, drive and willingness to take on tasks, while those associated with multi-cultural energy include an energising effect and the fostering of creativity and innovation.
“Research we have commissioned previously highlighted the importance that international students place on post-study work and career opportunities and outcomes, and how central this is to a successful overall student experience.
“This research showed that some students find New Zealand poses some challenges in this area,” McPherson said.
The research involved in-depth interviews with SME employers from a range of industries across New Zealand from Whangarei to Dunedin, and a further half-day workshop. The focus was on international graduates who have a post-study work rights visa within current immigration settings.
“There are clearly opportunities to improve employment outcomes for New Zealand-educated international graduates,” he said.
“ENZ is planning to re-define the perceived value of New Zealand-educated international graduates in the eyes of New Zealand employers, based on the research findings.”
Employability is a theme that sits across all three of the goals in the New Zealand International Education Strategy 2018-2030, launched in August last year.

With such a steady pair of hands at the helm, ENZ is confident the 28th New Zealand International Education Conference and Expo will be another inspirational conference for everyone who attends.
Taking place at the SKYCITY Conference Centre, Auckland on Wednesday 7 and Thursday 8 August, the conference is shaping up to be another two days packed full of thought-provoking conversations.

The E-News content refresh is the outcome of ENZ’s review of analytics over the past year. This has demonstrated our readers’ strong preference for forward-looking market insights and intelligence updates.
By tailoring the newsletter content to audience preferences, ENZ will be able to deliver a sharper, more insightful E-News to the international education sector.
ENZ’s General Manager – Stakeholders and Communications, John Goulter, said that ENZ is keen to offer more value through E-News, which is ENZ’s main industry-focused channel.
“We want to ensure we’re using E-News to truly help international education thinking and deliver better value to industry,” John said.
“With the new format, we will aim to share more market insights and updates from our International team and other sources, and articles on trends, new initiatives, research findings and other intelligence to help industry make informed decisions on marketing, student experience and adapting to the rapid pace of change in international education globally.”
The changes mean that from August onwards, we will publish E-News monthly instead of fortnightly.
The final fortnightly E-News issue will be published on 31 July, followed by a monthly issue starting the week of 19 August.

Korean students study in New Zealand under English scholarship programme
From mid-July, a group of 150 Korean students will attend intermediate and high schools in the Waikato, Nelson-Marlborough, Manawatu and Canterbury regions over eight weeks as part of a Korea-New Zealand English Scholarship Programme.
The scholarship programme is an outcome of a three-year education cooperation agreement (2016-2018), which is part of the Korea New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (FTA) that was signed in December 2015. Earlier this year, the two governments agreed to extend the programme for one more year to 2019.
Since the scholarship programme’s launch in 2016, 449 Korean students have visited New Zealand. The programme is operated by the Schools International Education Business Association (SIEBA) on ENZ’s behalf.
On 29 June, Korean students attended a pre-departure orientation session in Daejeon, where New Zealand Ambassador to the Republic of Korea, Philip Turner, congratulated the students and gave them an overview of school life in New Zealand.
ENZ’s Senior Market Development Manager – Korea, Kay Lee, said it was fantastic to think that at its conclusion the programme will have supported 599 Korean students to experience life in regional New Zealand.
ENZ’s Business Development Manager, Richard Kyle, said: “The scholarship programme is a great opportunity for Korean students to immerse themselves in a new culture, new language, and new experiences in New Zealand, and equally for Kiwi children to learn about the culture and lives of their Korean classmates.”
During their stay with Kiwi homestay families, the visiting students will be encouraged to share photos, study experiences and visit impressions through a mobile app as part of a Study in New Zealand competition.

Japan-New Zealand education ties strengthen with growing collaboration
Signed on 28 June, ENZ’s memorandum of understanding with Waseda University and its affiliate schools will be influential in developing international education exchanges that benefit institutions in Japan and New Zealand at school and tertiary level.
Under the MOU, the first cohort of 12 students from Waseda Jitsugyo School will visit New Zealand schools in mid-July. This will be followed by an ENZ and Air New Zealand-led familiarisation visit to New Zealand schools involving 10 schoolteachers from Japan, including a Waseda University staff member in charge of overseas programmes for its affiliate schools.
ENZ’s Senior Market Development Manager – Japan, Misa Kitaoka, said the MOU is a significant one as it helps develop a strong relationship between a prestigious Japanese university, its affiliate schools and New Zealand schools.
“By partnering with one of the top universities in the world, the MOU will not only promote student mobility from Japan but also boost New Zealand’s reputation and credibility in Japan,” Misa said.
“We are keen to replicate this strategic partnership with universities and affiliate schools in Japan’s regions.”
It was also fitting to see this MOU achieved in the lead up to NZIEC 2019 where Japan will feature as Country of Honour, Misa said.
“With the Rugby World Cup about to be held in Asia for the first time in the tournament’s history, it is fantastic to see Japan feature as the Country of Honour at NZIEC.”
The Country of Honour designation celebrates and showcases New Zealand’s international education connections with partner countries. Japan is New Zealand’s third-largest source country with more than 10,000 Japanese students enrolled here every year.
“We look forward to sharing the latest Japan market updates and opportunities with NZIEC delegates in three sessions involving guest speakers from Japan, whose unique insights will present new opportunities for partnerships and collaboration.”
Attendees will learn more about doing business with Japan, what the protocols are and the expectations of Japanese agents, education providers and government agencies. These insights will provide delegates with an overview of Japan’s internationalisation agenda and how it could be relevant to their international relations and marketing.
The conference dinner will celebrate Japan’s fascinating culture. Japanese Ambassador, His Excellency Hiroyasu Kobayashi, will be guest of honour.
