    The Schools International Education Business Association (SIEBA) aims to provide leadership, increased business capability, greater collaboration and stronger representation for New Zealand schools in the international education sector.

    ENZ supports NZTech to organise networking and capability-building events for the EdTech community.

    NZTech organises the EdTech for Export (et4e) conference stream as part of the Education Technology Summit.

    The et4e website’s business directory makes it easier to forge connections and take advantage of commercial opportunities.

    Education publishers’ export growth programme 

    ENZ has partnered with the Publishers Association of New Zealand to:

    • develop an export growth strategy
    • support access to markets
    • develop new markets.

    Strategic roadmaps

    New Zealand’s international education industry has developed strategic roadmaps to guide its future growth to 2025. The roadmaps contain ‘strategic choices’ and ‘specific actions’ that are key to achieving success.

  • Our role

    ENZ is New Zealand’s government agency for building international education. We promote New Zealand as a study destination and support the delivery of education services offshore.  We also administer scholarships to support New Zealanders studying overseas particularly in Asia and Latin America.

    What we do

    ENZ works with New Zealand’s diverse education industry, organisations and companies that cover six sectors:

    ENZ:

    • leads the future thinking of New Zealand’s international education industry, and drives forward future activities for growth of the industry
    • facilitates education industry capability so providers can effectively recruit and support international students
    • helps the education industry to identify new opportunities for growth
    • leverages the offshore promotional activities of other NZ Inc agencies - such as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Immigration New Zealand, Tourism New Zealand and New Zealand Trade and Enterprise - to raise the profile of New Zealand education
    • works closely with other New Zealand agencies to create an environment in which international education can grow and international students can flourish
    • provides information to prospective international students and their families about living and studying in New Zealand
    • works with other agencies and the education industry to ensure international students continue to receive a high quality experience while living and studying in New Zealand
    • spreads the word about the social, cultural and economic benefits of international education within New Zealand.

    Grant McPherson | Chief Executive

    Grant McPherson 4

    Grant is our Chief Executive at Education New Zealand.

    He leads ENZ in taking New Zealand's education experiences to the world for enduring economic, social and cultural benefits for all New Zealand.

    In response to COVID-19, Grant chairs the International Education Chief Executives' Group. Together with peers from other government agencies with interests in international education, the group helps drive the Government's Recovery Plan for our sector.

    He also lives and breathes international education - he is an international student himself, his children have international study experience and he has hosted students in Wellington with his family.

    Prior to his role at ENZ, Grant was Deputy Chief Executive and General Manager, Strategy at New Zealand Trade & Enterprise (NZTE), following extensive experience as Regional Director, South/South East Asia and Group General Manager, Business Solutions on the NZTE Leadership team.  

    Fiona Cameron | Director, People and Culture, Property and Legal

    Fiona has an extensive mix of private and public Human Resources/Organisation Development (HR/OD) experience. She has worked in globally-based organisations and in many of the New Zealand education sector agencies. Fiona has a Diploma in Teaching, an MA (hons) in French Literature and recently completed a Graduate Diploma in Commerce specialising in commercial law.

    Fiona’s team focuses on making ENZ a great place to work. This starts from day one, with an induction experience that attracts rave reviews. The HR/OD team regularly works with ENZ managers to ensure staff are offered a range of development opportunities while they’re here. The team leads work in building a ‘one team’ culture at ENZ, where being passionate, innovative, knowledgeable and business savvy are highly valued. 

    John Goulter | General Manager, Stakeholders and Communications

    Joghn G resized 1John joined ENZ in December 2013. He has broad experience in government relations, issues management and public affairs, having worked for organisations including Inland Revenue, Telecom NZ, and the Earthquake Commission, and as chief press secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office. Formerly a journalist, John spent several years working in the Parliamentary Press Gallery as a political editor.

    John’s team gathers, analyses and shares information and intelligence to keep ENZ and its stakeholders apprised of news, trends, events and opportunities, to help them operate more effectively in the international education space.

    Paul Irwin | General Manager, Partnerships and Marketing

    paul Irwin 3Paul joined ENZ from advertising agency FCB Wellington, where he led the Wellington office for almost five years. He has extensive experience in marketing strategy, digital marketing, international marketing and team management, honed during the past 15 years in a range of management roles.

    Recent award-winning campaigns at FCB include Inland Revenue’s Overseas Based Borrowers student loans campaign and the Electricity Authority’s Whats My Number campaign. He worked with the Ministry of Education to launch the inaugural Prime Minister’s Education Excellence Awards, and with the Open Polytechnic on their Learning for an Open World brand repositioning campaign.

    Prior to these New Zealand-based roles, Paul worked for the Economist in London and then Asia, setting up the marketing department in Singapore and growing revenue from their publishing products. 

    Throughout his career Paul has worked with numerous government clients including NZTE, SSC, ACC, and the Reserve Bank, and other organisations such as Forest and Bird, Public Trust and Fairfax Media.

    Matt Penney | Chief Financial and Information Officer

    Matt Penney 2 3Matt joined ENZ in October 2014. He previously held Financial Controller roles at Bathurst Resources and Contact Energy, and has worked in New Zealand, the United Kingdom and Ireland for various listed companies and a state owned enterprise. Matt is a Chartered Accountant and has a Bachelor of Commerce and Administration from Victoria University of Wellington.

    Matt’s team carries out the finance functions of ENZ, including budgeting, financial planning and strategic planning. Matt’s team is also responsible for ensuring ENZ’s IT systems and processes

    Lisa Futschek | General Manager, International

    Lisa joined ENZ in 2013 after an 18-year diplomatic career with MFAT which included five years as the Deputy Head of Mission at the New Zealand Embassy in Berlin, and three years as First Secretary and Consul at the New Zealand Embassy in Santiago. 

    At ENZ Lisa has spearheaded initiatives such as the Generation Study Abroad and Go Overseas scholarships, Game on English, and she has championed the development of local language and tailored marketing materials. Her 40-strong team leads ENZ’s internationalisation efforts through influence, insights and reciprocal partnerships.

    Lisa has been instrumental in the establishment of a permanent ENZ presence in Tokyo and Washington DC.

    She is a trained television director and a graduate of the University of Otago and the University of Auckland. Lisa and her husband Regan are based in Wellington and have two teenagers, a son and a daughter, studying at high school.

    Steve Maharey | Chair

    Steve Maharey is an independent Director, commentator and consultant on a wide range of social and political issues. He was previously the Vice-Chancellor of Massey University. He is a former Member of Parliament and Senior Minister in the New Zealand Government (1999-2008). In 2009, as part of the Queen's New Year Honours List, Steve was made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services as a Member of Parliament.

    Lyn Provost | Board member

    Lyn Provost was Controller and Auditor-General from October 2009 until 2017. From 2001 to 2009 she was the first female and civilian Deputy Commissioner of New Zealand Police. Lyn is currently a member of the International Auditing and Assurance Board. In 2016 she received the Global category award in the nationwide Women of Influence awards. In 2017, as part of the Queen's Birthday Honours List, Lyn was made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to the State.

    Dr Linda Sissons | Board Member

    Dr Linda Sissons is a highly experienced chief executive in the tertiary education sector. Dr Sissons is currently the Acting Chief Executive at UCOL. She was also a member of the NZIST Establishment Board (2019-2020).

    Before that she was interim Chief Executive of Taratahi Agricultural Training Centre (2015-2016), Chief Executive of the Wellington Institute of Technology (2001-2015) and of Hutt Valley Polytechnic (1999-2001). In 2006, Dr Sissons was made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to tertiary education.  

    Victoria Spackman | Board member

    Victoria Spackman is Chair of Ackama Group, a Wellington- and Melbourne-based technology company, and co-owner and Director of screen and visitor experience company the Gibson Group and was its Chief Executive. She was the founding Director of Te Auaha New Zealand Institute of Creativity at WelTec and Whitireia Polytechnics and served three terms as a Director of Screenrights (Australia).

    Ms Spackman’s other governance experience includes: committee member of FirstBoards, a working group of the Institute of Directors which encourages high quality governance in small to medium enterprises and new companies; 12 years with Bats Theatre; and the Screen Production and Development Association. Ms Spackman holds qualifications in arts and law from Victoria University of Wellington.

    In 2012, she was awarded the LexisNexis Private Sector In-House Lawyer of the Year. In 2015 she received the Arts and Culture category award in the nationwide Women of Influence awards.

    In June 2016, as part of the Queen’s 90th Birthday Honours List, Ms Spackman was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to theatre, film and television.

    Rachael Tuwhangai | Board member

    Rachael is a descendant of the Tainui Waka and of Ngati Maniapoto. She is Co-Director of Maori and Pasifika Support Services (MAPSS) which focuses on the intersection between indigenous people’s and improving social outcomes. She is a former academic of the University of Auckland’s Faculty of Education; Education Manager of the Auckland South Corrections Facility, and a former Secondary School Teacher.

    Rachael’s governance experience includes:
    The New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA), Manukau Institute of Technology, The Auckland Museum, Voyce: Whakarongo mai, Variety Children’s Charity, Man Alive Charitable Trust, Auckland Community Law Centre and COMET Auckland.

    Daniel Wilson | Board Member

    Daniel Wilson started his career in Auckland as a music teacher.  After positions at several schools in Auckland and London, Daniel was appointed to the Leadership team at Manurewa High School in 2007, firstly as Deputy, then Associate Principal.

    In 2015, Daniel moved to Nelson to take up the position of Principal at Nayland College. Daniel has extensive knowledge of International education from a secondary perspective, with Nayland College hosting approximately 80 international students from around the globe in 2020. Daniel also has a very good understanding of a range of markets and marketing approaches, having overseen a 40% increase in International numbers since joining Nayland College.

    As well as leading Nayland College, Daniel is also the Lead Principal and Governance Chairperson for the Top of the South Trades Academy. He has also acted as a Regional Engagement Lead for the recent National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) review. Over the years Daniel has, and continues to work with various national and regional advisory groups. In his spare time Daniel is an accomplished brass musician, playing trombone in a variety of musical groups around Nelson and serving as President of Nelson City Brass.

    Shruthi Vijayakumar | Future Director

    Shruthi has joined the ENZ Board for 12 months as part of the New Zealand Institute of Directors’ Future Directors Programme.

    She is passionate about building ethical leaders and education’s role to address our world’s environmental and social issues. Shruthi currently runs her own coaching & facilitation business, is a co-founder of Emerge Institute and teaches at AUT. She has previously led operations for Better World Ed, a global education start-up and led climate innovation and impact programmes with the European Union and various universities.

    Shruthi received an MBA from the University of Oxford, has been recognised as a Global Shaper by the World Economic Forum, and was a semi-finalist for the Young New Zealander of the Year Award.

    The ENZ team works together to works to grow awareness of New Zealand as a study destination and to support New Zealand education providers and businesses to take their services and products overseas for enduring social, cultural and economic benefits.

    Through development of a world-class international education sector, we will build a thriving and globally connected New Zealand.

    It has more than 90 staff in 22 locations around the world. In New Zealand, it has a head office in Wellington and staff in Auckland and Christchurch.

    Partnerships and Marketing

    The New Zealand-based Partnerships and Marketing team leads and implements strategic initiatives for the sustainable growth of New Zealand’s international education industry and develops the value proposition for New Zealand education globally.

    The team’s partnerships function works with the international education industry to build a deep understanding of sector growth opportunities and supports industry players to establish and grow relationships with education institutions globally. The team’s marketing function leads and drives the student acquisition engine as well as the student experience effort in New Zealand.

    From Wellington, the team also delivers ENZ’s inbound and outbound scholarships programme.

    International

    The International team is the face of ENZ around the world. It develops and maintains key relationships with governments, organisations and international stakeholders, and leads ENZ’s engagement globally for enhanced education cooperation.

    As in-market experts, the team drives the flow of market intelligence and targeted advice to ENZ’s Strategy, Insights and Planning and Partnerships and Marketing teams. They support New Zealand institutions overseas, and work at offshore fairs and events to attract students to New Zealand.

    Stakeholders and Communications 

    The Stakeholders and Communications team informs, connects with, and influences ENZ’s audiences and stakeholders.

    The team delivers advice and support to ministers and government agencies on international education, drives inter-agency work on the International Education Strategy 2018-2030, influences key policy settings for the benefit of the international education sector, manages ENZ’s social licence work ensuring all New Zealanders understand the broader contribution of international education to New Zealand and ensures that ENZ meets its accountability obligations. 

    Strategy, Insight and Planning 

    The Strategy, Insight and Planning team identifies, leads and drives strategic thinking, implementation and business intelligence through a variety of priority projects for New Zealand's international education sector.

    The team manages ENZ’s Insights function, delivering intelligence that adds value to the development of the international education sector.

    It is also responsible for leading major new initiatives, bringing together talent from across the organisation to ensure future-focussed project delivery, making maximum use of organisation-wide knowledge.

    People and Culture 

    The People and Culture team focuses on making ENZ a great place to work. From recruitment and induction to safety and wellbeing, it ensures staff have the skills and information needed to do their jobs effectively.

    The team works with managers to give staff opportunities for professional development and leads work on ENZ’s ‘one team’ culture.

    Corporate Services 

    The corporate services team maintains effective financial controls and processes such as budgeting, and financial and strategic planning.

    It processes ENZ’s financial transactions, ensures its procurement processes are sound, and ensures its IT systems and processes support our global organisation.
