  • AUT international students connect with senior citizens

     A uniquely engaging initiative supported by New Zealand Police and AUT recently brought together international students and local senior citizens to connect in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland. 

    The initiative was an outcome of a meeting of the Auckland Agency Group, of which Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao is a member and enabled international students to understand and start to integrate into local culture guided by senior residents and members of the wider Auckland community. 

    As the last 12 months have seen the welcome return of international students to our campuses and communities, New Zealand Police Ethnic Services teams around the country, including in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, have been busy engaging with international students in a number of ways.   

    Around 18 students met with 10 senior citizens at the Northbridge Residential Village 

    The event helped international students engage with their local community, establishing intergenerational bonds, helped them access support networks, engage in cultural exchange, and actively participating in community affairs.  

    The event included a panel discussion involving members of Northbridge Residential Village, AUT international students, and New Zealand Police. The panel discussion unfolded in two key segments: the initial part addressed the dynamics of culture shock, while the subsequent portion revolved around the overarching themes of diversity and inclusion. 

    AUT Students Association, International Affairs Officer, Yun Ke, said that the AUT international student interaction with local senior citizens event was a great success 

    We have received immensely positive feedback from students about the event, which is exciting  

    This interaction saw double the participation by international students, as compared to a previously held event in September, Ke said.  

    San Winkyi, an international student from Myanmar, was grateful to New Zealand Police for the way they supported the event.  

    The police’s presence and assistance contributed significantly to the event's success, and we deeply appreciate their commitment to international student safety and wellbeing,” San said.  

    For Huabiao Xiao, an international student from China, the interaction was a wonderful opportunity to appreciate cultural differences while enjoying communicating with an open and inclusive local community of senior citizens.  

    Spending time with local seniors and police officers was an amazing experience, far beyond anything I could have imagined. These elders are simply the epitome of local cultures and society, and I deeply appreciate their differences and uniqueness. At the same time, I appreciated how New Zealand police officers are committed to promoting a community culture,” Huabiao said.

  • First research projects funded through NZ Centre at IIT Delhi

    Ten projects will each receive seed funding of USD10,000 for one year, half funded by IIT Delhi and half by the New Zealand university involved. 

    The New Zealand Centre at IIT Delhi was established in February 2020 as a focal point for joint academic activity between New Zealand's eight universities and IIT Delhi.  

    The purpose of the Centre is to promote relationships of understanding and co-operation across diverse fields of academic and other sector engagement between New Zealand and India. One of the Centre’s key objectives is to promote joint research projects among IIT Delhi and New Zealand universities in thematic areas of research important for both countries.  

    Below is the list of funded projects: 

    • Design of an electron cyclotron resonance based magnetically steered plasma thruster – IIT Delhi and University of Auckland  
    • Utilisation of Ammonia in a Spark-Ignition engine – IIT Delhi and Victoria University of Wellington    
    • Study on beam-to-column connections of cold formed steel portal frames for low-cost sustainable construction – IIT Delhi and University of Auckland   
    • Andreev reflection in twisted bilayer graphene junctions: effect of magnetic field – IIT Delhi and Victoria University of Wellington    
    • Deciphering the genome wide DNA methylation and transcriptomic signature of hypoxia in meningioma – IIT Delhi and University of Otago     
    • Discovering novel long non-coding RNA associated with epigenetic signatures colorectal cancer and dissecting their role in tumour heterogeneity – IIT Delhi and University of Otago  
    • Adaptive Drone swarms for precision agriculture and wildlife conservation – IIT Delhi and Auckland University of Technology     
    • Understanding exit choice behaviour in metro stations using virtual reality – IIT Delhi and Massey University   
    • Digital twin base health management of wind turbine power train – IIT Delhi and Victoria University of Wellington     
    • Building Code checker model on BIM structural plans using AI approach – IIT Delhi and Victoria University of Wellington.

  • Strong start for Cohort 4 international students

    Already more than 3,500 international students have been nominated by their education providers and confirmed by education agencies.  More than 1,900 of these students have had their Request for Travel approved and have been invited by Immigration New Zealand to apply for their student visas, since the process opened on 13 April 2022. 

    Places remain available for students with a number of ELS and PTE providers. Only education providers can nominate students for this cohort. Interested international students or their agents should contact ELS or PTEs as soon as possible. Of the 5,000 places in this cohort, 1,000 were allocated to ELS and 850 to PTEs, with the remainder going to universities, Te Pūkenga, and secondary schools 

    Once they have been nominated by an education provider and confirmed by education agencies, students have two weeks to make their Request for Travel through the Immigration New Zealand website. Following approval of the Request for Travel, students then have one month to complete and submit a student visa application to Immigration New Zealand, in time for a mid-year start for their studies.  

    Education providers are due to complete their nominations by 6 May 2022.  Any unused places will be transferred to other providers, which means that some providers may get additional places as part of the reallocation process. 

    This is the fourth cohort of international students to be granted a border exception to enter New Zealand and is part of the progressive reopening of our borders. All visa categories are due to reopen from October 2022 onwards, including visitor and student visas.

  • New advisory board to support our North American strategy

    Established by Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao in 2021, this voluntary advisory board includes former Study Abroad scholarship winners to New Zealand, independent education counsellors, and senior leaders in international education in the United States. Members have a shared interest in developing educational ties between the US and NZ and are supporting ENZ’s North America team to implement our strategy for this market.  

    The 10-member board has established three sub-committees that will develop signature projects to raise awareness of New Zealand’s education brand and promote student flow between the two countries. The sub-committees cover:   

    • Alumni engagement and student experience: Three board members were former students in New Zealand and discussed ways in which ENZ and institutions could better support international students before, during, and after their study experience in New Zealand.   
    • State consortia engagement: The United States is vast and decentralised. This sub-committee is advising and assisting with partnership development around State-run education consortia that, in some States, oversee international education initiatives from Kindergarten through PhD-level Colleges and Universities.  
    • Foundation engagement: In the US, grants, research and special projects are largely funded by foundations set up by companies and individuals. Sub-committee members will use their expertise and networks to help identify foundations whose interests align with ENZ’s and New Zealand’s education and economic goals to set up funded partnerships between the two countries. 

    The overall aim of this work is to:  

    • position New Zealand as a destination of choice for students from diverse backgrounds by promoting and changing the understood narrative of New Zealand  
    • identify and develop strategic, reciprocal partnerships that align with our goals  
    • evaluate aspects of our programming and outreach related to:   
    • diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI)  
    • student care  
    • help the ENZ North America team determine how we translate and explain Māori values to North American audiences, how they relate to our work, and how they can contribute to the field of international education  
    • provide a North American context to international education including but not limited to study abroad, full degree, exchange, and hybrid learning.  

    DEI is a core part of ENZ’s North American strategy for international education. We hope to move beyond perceptions of New Zealand as a country suitable for adventure seekers, to position New Zealand as a diverse country with a strong bicultural heritage, rich ideals of social justice, and an ideal education destination for students from marginalised backgrounds.
