  • Study in New Zealand wins Weibo award

Sina is one of China’s biggest online media companies, operating four major business lines, including Sina Weibo, a Twitter-like microblogging social network that has over 500 million users worldwide.

The Study in New Zealand Weibo page was launched in August 2014 with the goals of growing brand awareness, attracting prospective students and engaging New Zealand alumni in China. It is managed by a China-based social media agency in partnership with the ENZ’s Marketing and Channel Development team.

On our award, Sina noted: “[Study in New Zealand is] focused on growing student numbers and the public understanding of New Zealand education. [Study in New Zealand’s Weibo account] helps Chinese students easily understand and select the appropriate New Zealand [institutions] so that they enjoy a pleasant study abroad [experience].”

  • Introducing Joyce Hu in Taiwan

What is your role at ENZ in Taiwan?

I joined ENZ in October 2015 as Education Marketing Manager in Taipei, replacing Jamie Chien. I divide my time between ENZ (30 percent) and MFAT at the New Zealand Commerce and Industry Office (70 percent), where I provide executive and administrative support to the Director.  At ENZ, I report to Regional Director – Greater China Alexandra Grace.

What are your priorities in this role?

    My priorities are to:

    • Raise the profile of New Zealand education to agents

    • Support New Zealand education providers doing business in Taiwan, by introducing them to local stakeholders

    • Organise and run ENZ’s marketing and promotional activities on behalf of ENZ

What’s your connection to New Zealand?

I have participated in an MFAT management course in Wellington, and also escorted a Taiwan television crew to New Zealand to shoot a feature programme on New Zealand business and society.

I have a lot of experience in running events, managing official visits and dealing with requests for consular assistance from New Zealanders in Taiwan.

I am passionate about New Zealand as a lovely place to live, to work, and to study, and I enjoy telling the New Zealand education story in Taiwan.

I look forward to meeting more New Zealand education providers when they visit here, so please email me at joyce.hu@mfat.govt.nz  if you have any questions before your visit.

  • Staff changes at ENZ

    South and South East Asia

It is with regret that we are saying goodbye to Regional Director – South and South East Asia (SSEA), Ziena Jalil, and Lead – International (SSEA), Francesca Hilbron, who have both decided to pursue other opportunities this year. ENZ wishes Ziena and Francesca all the best in their new endeavours.

To ensure ENZ continues to maximise the opportunities the SSEA region offers New Zealand education providers, these two key roles will be filled on an interim basis from February 1 to June 30, while permanent replacements are found.

Stepping in to these roles will be:

John Laxon – Acting Regional Director India, (South Asia)

John Laxon is taking the role of Acting Regional Director India, along with his current role as Regional Director, Middle East. John will continue to be based in Riyadh, but will spend some extended periods working out of India.

Grant Fuller – Acting Regional Lead, South East Asia

Grant Fuller, based in Guangzhou, will be Acting Regional Lead, South East Asia on a part-time basis. Grant has previously been NZTE Trade Commissioner in Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia, worked in Minister Joyce’s office and led the Board and Ministerial team at NZTE. Recently he has been working with MBIE, ENZ and Wintec on projects in Asia.

Providers can feel confident that they can rely on continued support from the capable and experienced in-market SSEA staff led by Ben Burrowes, and Wellington-based John Mollo, with whom many of you work on a regular basis.

    The Americas and Europe

Lisa Futschek – Regional Director, the Americas and Europe

The country portfolio of Wellington-based Regional Director, Lisa Futschek, has changed. While continuing in her role as Regional Director for the US and Latin America, Lisa will swap her responsibilities in Japan and Korea for those in Europe. Lisa previously worked for MFAT in Germany so is well-placed help drive growth in the Europe market.

Cecily Lin – Acting Regional Lead North Asia (Japan and Korea)

Cecily Lin, based in Wellington, will be Acting Regional Lead, North Asia (Japan and Korea). Cecily’s experience as International Market Manager, Latin America and North Asia, makes her an excellent fit for a deeper role in supporting providers in Japan and Korea.

    Other changes

It is also with regret that we announce the departure of two other staff who are moving on to new challenges:

    • Sam Hoben – Senior Advisor, Strategy and Governance, has moved to a new role at the Ministry of Social Development.

    • Cheryll Wagener – International Events Coordinator, has taken up a role closer to her home on the Kapiti Coast.

Both Sam and Cheryll have made important contributions to ENZ, and we wish them well in their new roles.

Rachel Brandon has joined the team as International Event Coordinator on a three month contract.

Rachel has recently returned from Japan where she was part of the JET programme for three years. With a degree in international relations, experience as an international student in the Philippines and more recently as customer service lead for an online retail organisation, Rachel will bring valuable experience to the international event team.

  • Telling the whole New Zealand story

We want to see the benefits of international education spread across all regions and sectors, so ENZ has boosted its team to better support international education growth in the regions.

New appointees Sarah Gauthier, Sahinde Pala and Jo Keane join Christchurch-based Business Development Manager, Greg Scott, to ensure ENZ’s Regional Partnership Programme activities are well-supported by a team of highly-experienced international education practitioners.

ENZ’s General Manager Business Development, Clive Jones, says, “I’m excited about starting 2016 with a strong regional team who are committed to helping our regions achieve growth. Greg and the team are passionate regional advocates, who are keen to get stuck in and work with regional providers and agencies to put plans into action.”

Many of you will be familiar with the new Regional Project Managers:

    Sahinde20small

Sahinde Pala has joined ENZ from her role as Marketing Manager at  LSI Language Studies International Worldwide. Sahinde is based in Auckland.

    Sarah Gauthier Photo20small

Sarah Gauthier moves back to ENZ after her recent work as ‎Export Education Coordinator at Dunedin City Council. Sarah will be based in Wellington.

  • New Brand Ambassador video available

ENZ sat down with Stephen to capture the story of how his New Zealand education shaped his success. Stephen attributes the New Zealand style of learning to his ability to be able to think creatively and problem solve – valuable skills to have when facing the world’s best cricket teams!

We spent time with Stephen at his alma mater, Canterbury University, where he studied to become a teacher, and at Christchurch school, Medbury, where he offered some advice to a Year 7 cricket team. We also filmed his meeting with an Indian student who is completing a PhD in New Zealand, researching cricketers’ shoulder injuries.

ENZ is using the Stephen Fleming video to help tell the New Zealand education story in India via social media and at events, including in presentations to prospective students.

You can watch the video on our YouTube channel. We encourage you, and your agents, to download it for use from The Brand Lab.

  • Around the world in five: News round-up

    1. Global: If 2015 was the year of pathways and industry consolidation, The Pie News predicts that 2016 will see our industry dominated by the price of oil, an overhaul of English language products, instant message marketing, the refugee crisis, government changes in both source and destination countries, and innovation in student services.
    2. Saudi Arabia: Newly appointed Education Minister Ahmed Al-Issa spoke to Arab News about his priorities for the education system and changes to the outbound scholarship scheme. An announcement on scholarship allocations is expected soon.
    3. China: Chinese students are heading overseas for education at younger ages; Jinghua reports that the proportion of students going abroad for high school has increased from 17 to 27 percent in recent years, in contrast to a decrease from 61 to 44 percent heading overseas after completing high school. Meanwhile, approvals for pathway programmes to Western universities are being curtailed according to Times Higher Education.
    4. United States: ICEF Monitor reports on recent surveys which compared the perceptions between U.S. students and admission officers as to which communications channels are the most effective for reaching and engaging prospective students. The results may surprise.
    5. Brazil: The Pie News reports on concerns a proposed tax may have on the outbound study abroad market. Students may need to pay tax on tuition to foreign institutions.

  • Immigration reminder: Pathway Visa Pilot

    logoPrint 2

Invitations to take part in the pilot were issued to those institutions that have a student visa application approval rate of 90 percent or higher for the 2014/15 financial year.

More detailed information about the pathway visa and the list of providers who have, as at 22 December 2015, signed up to take part, can be found on the Immigration New Zealand website here. The list will be updated on 1 February.

Pathway student visas will allow international students to undertake a progression of up to three consecutive programmes of study with qualifying education providers on a single visa. For example, this may involve three consecutive years at secondary school or an English language course followed by foundation study and then a degree programme.

The 18 month pilot period, which began on 7 December, will enable INZ to evaluate pilot outcomes, such as student transition rates from the first to the second programme of study and how well the arrangements between education providers are working.
