  • Growth in the outdoors

    The Outdoor Education New Zealand (ODENZ) cluster has been working since 2002 to develop this niche, and enrolments are rising from northern Europe. 

    ODENZ chief executive Ian Reedy says the participating schools from across the country are united by two things: passion for the outdoors, and awareness that joint marketing efforts are the way to go. 

    ODENZ is growing the international outdoor education business through a concerted multi-year campaign, with support funding from Education New Zealand. The aim is to end up a self-sustaining organisation with a regular ‘in-market’ presence in northern Europe.

    In 2012 there were 184 international students recruited to outdoor ed programmes at participating schools. Figures for Term 1 2014 show an encouraging trend, with 20 percent growth against the same time in 2013. This year they come from Germany, Norway, Switzerland, Austria and Luxembourg.

    The aims for 2014 and 2015 are to increase the number of schools in the cluster, and to increase the numbers of students on the ground – or the water, or high on the rockface…

    To help share the story of what makes New Zealand unique, Education New Zealand has developed the New Zealand Education Brand Story.

    Launched tonight at the New Zealand International Education Conference 2013 in Christchurch by the Minister for Tertiary Education, Skills and Employment, Steven Joyce, the New Zealand Education Brand Story is a suite of resources you can use to share the distinctive benefits of New Zealand education in an emotionally engaging and inspiring way.

    The central messages – all focused around the concept of ‘new’ and being open to the new – are articulated in a captivating two-minute video and associated marketing resources including photographs, logos, branded templates and presentations that you can use when marketing your institution, business, region or the country as a whole.

    The idea behind developing these marketing resources is that by first building awareness of New Zealand education internationally – who we are, what we stand for and what we offer as a country – it will pave the way for you to introduce your school, university, business or institution and its distinctive strengths in more detail.

    You can access these resources through a new marketing toolkit – The Brand Lab.

  • Education in the spotlight during Governor-General’s visit to Viet Nam

    Sir Jerry Mateparae attended two major education events during this visit.  In Hanoi the New Zealand Embassy and ENZ hosted a “New Zealand Education Connections” event, which for the first time ever in Viet Nam, brought together New Zealand alumni from different parts of the Vietnamese economy and society.

    About 250 private students, NZ Aid scholarship recipients and recipients of English Language Teaching for Officials (ELTO) were represented at the event. New Zealand teachers in Viet Nam were also well represented.

    The Governor-General spoke about the value of education as a bridge builder for long term relationships and connections between the two countries.  In all of his meetings with senior Vietnamese leaders and officials stronger education collaboration was emphasised as a key priority for New Zealand’s relationship with Viet Nam.

    In Ho Chi Minh City (which accounts for about 60 percent of all Vietnamese students to New Zealand), Sir Jerry Mateparae delivered an address to 170 students, staff and senior Vietnamese officials at the University of Science, which is part of the Vietnamese National University. The University has nine faculties with around 652 professors and more than 16,000 students.  

    Auckland University of Technology has a joint programme with the University of Science, delivering a Bachelor of Computer and Information Sciences (BCIS). There are 130 students enrolled in the programme, in addition to the 250 graduates of this programme.

    At this event, the Governor-General spoke about the importance of partnerships in education, not only between governments, but also between New Zealand and Vietnamese institutions.  Senior officials present expressed the hope that in future there would be more New Zealand and Vietnamese universities engaged in the kind of collaboration demonstrated by AUT and the University of Science, Ho Chi Minh City.Both events attracted plenty of media attention, and helped to raise the profile of New Zealand as an education partner for Viet Nam in advance of the New Zealand education fairs taking place in September.
