    Objectives

    1. Test an online-focused audience’s appetite for courses delivered under an NZ country brand
    2. Explore sector capability and willingness for generating and promoting online courses
    3. Test, understand and validate ENZ's role in the online education space
    4. Maintaining awareness of the NZ Education brand and NZ as an education destination in target markets

    FutureLearn platform and courses

    • New Zealand’s offerings include short courses from leading universities, English language schools, vocational PTEs, Institutes of Technology, and edtech educators including virtual reality developers and game designers.
    • These not for credit courses are on average 6-8 hours long from providers across the sector. 
    • FutureLearn is a global online education platform jointly owned by the UK’s Open University and The SEEK Group with an existing community of approximately 15 million learners globally. 
    • These courses are available to learners (including teachers and educators) all over the world, including here in New Zealand.

    FutureLearn is actively promoting this campaign in the following prototype markets: 

    • Thailand​, Japan​, Korea​, China​, India​, Brazil​, Indonesia​, USA​, Vietnam, Germany​, UK, Colombia 

    In addition, ENZ will be promoting this opportunity to its global learner database, and through other owned channels, including website and social media.

    By joining forces and sharing the same message, we can tell a stronger, more consistent story about the FutureLearn prototype, and the opportunity it represents.

    The Campaign’s place in the wider strategy for international education

    • ENZ is leading a programme of work that focuses on the diversification of international education products and services. It forms part of the Government’s Recovery Plan for International Education, under the “Transforming to a More Sustainable Future State” workstream.  
    • The New Zealand International Education Strategy, 2018 is clear in its goals for achieving a thriving and globally connected New Zealand through world-class international education.  
    • Goal 2 of the Strategy is Sustainable Growth - the international education sector flourishes through diversification of markets, people flows and innovative products and services. 

    Talking points for providers

    • We are proud to be part of ENZ’s new pilot, launched with FutureLearn.
    • This initiative will showcase a selection of taster courses from New Zealand providers to worldwide online learners, under the national Think New brand umbrella.
    • The 12-month initiative launched 8 June and is part ENZ’s Diversifying Products and Services programme of work.
    • By taking part, we are supporting the Government’s Recovery Plan for International Education.

    Provider participation benefits
    These messages are useful when talking about the campaign to other staff in your organisation

    • This initiative is an opportunity to further raise our profile to a global audience, benefiting from the exposure generated by FutureLearn and the ENZ-funded global campaign.
    • We’re able to test a new recruitment and distribution channel at little cost.
    • As providers, we receive notification of any further interest generated by these online courses, which could lead to further study opportunities – either online (on FutureLearn or elsewhere), or onshore when current border restrictions sufficiently ease.
    • As part of the process FutureLearn worked alongside providers like us, supporting us while we created (or optimised) content for the platform.
    • Standard membership fees are being waived by FutureLearn for this prototype.
    • ENZ is also funding a global campaign via FutureLearn to promote the prototype.

    More about FutureLearn

    • FutureLearn offer courses from around 250 providers from around the world. These courses range from tasters to full online degrees.
    • 15 million learners use the platform. Many (27%) users are UK-based but increasing numbers of learners across the globe are accessing FutureLearn.

    Tips for promoting the campaign

    By aligning our marketing activity, ENZ and providers can tell clear and consistent message about the online study courses available with FutureLearn and providers. Here are some tips to start promoting your FutureLearn courses on your channels:

    Tip 1: Use the digital assets available in your promotions:

    There are plenty of campaign assets designed with campaign messaging available for you to use now on The Brand Lab. Assets have been specifically created to use across websites, emails, social channels & other digital advertising.

    Check out The Brand Lab to download and use images, animated tiles, email signatures, an editable ad template where you can feature your own logo and much more!

    Tip 2: Share our FutureLearn & Online Learning blogs

    We’ve created a blog for a learner audience to promote starting a New Zealand education online, through the FutureLearn product. Check out the blog here and share on your own social channels or website.

  • From the CE: SWNZ: The new platform for new ways of study

    In June, ENZ launched our new initiative with FutureLearn, which offers online courses from a range of New Zealand education providers on a shared platform to more than 15 million learners worldwide. We also hosted the highly successful New Zealand Partners’ Workshop Week which brought together more than 2,700 stakeholders from across the Asian region to collaborate on building the future of the international education sector – to benefit New Zealand and our global partners.

    I am more than happy to keep the good news momentum rolling into July with the launch of our Study with New Zealand learner platform - the official government site for advice on studying with New Zealand.

    Study With New Zealand (SWNZ) is the evolution of the ENZ learner eco-system, transforming student experience to one that is intuitive and scalable.

    Formerly Study in New Zealand, SWNZ merges our learner platforms to deliver a more personalised experience and to demonstrate that today there are more ways to access a New Zealand education. The new platform showcases our portfolio of study options including global pathways and online learning.

    While we continue to navigate the impacts of COVID-19, it’s clear the world has changed, and so has the future of international education. Inviting students to study with New Zealand is more than just a subtle shift in language. SWNZ responds to the sector’s immediate needs in the current, rapidly changing landscape, and positions it for long-term success.​ It introduces our new ways of learning and encourages students to begin studying toward a New Zealand education, from just about anywhere in the world.

    The industry’s ‘Think New’ brand has evolved and stretched to fulfil this promise in a way that makes sense and fits well with the challenges of right now. 

    The first release went live on 1 July, showcasing our new brand experience as well as introducing these new study modes. The team are working towards a full migration with the next milestone in September, where SWNZ will be ready to support the new brand campaign as well as the new student member centre.

    Moving forward, SWNZ will empower ENZ to work with the sector to continue to deliver economic, social and cultural value to New Zealand and New Zealanders.

    This initiative supports the Government's Recovery Plan for the international education sector. Part three of the Plan led by Education New Zealand, Transforming to a more sustainable future state, has accelerated the diversification of products and services - one of three goals set out in the New Zealand International Education Strategy.

  • That’s a wrap: Highlights from New Zealand Partners Workshop Week

    The week helped bring together education industry mainstays and influencers from New Zealand and Asia. Together they deliberated on partnership models and discussed ways to prepare and strengthen joint relationships that will navigate the future of the education sector.

    ENZ’s new initiative with FutureLearn was also launched to international education stakeholders this week as an example of how New Zealand is diversifying its education offering for those who can’t travel here. This initiative provides online courses from a range of New Zealand education providers on a shared platform to more than 15 million learners worldwide.

    Held between 14-18 June, NZPWW was ENZ’s first ever large-scale virtual event targeting Asian government stakeholders, education institutes, agents and media. The week contained 23 hours of content including 234 sessions, more than 40 of which were streamed live.

    Minister of Education Hon. Chris Hipkins inaugurated the NZPWW with encouraging words, followed by a musical performance by Aotearoa icon Stan Walker.

    “It’s clear to me that relationships formed through education over the years have kept New Zealand connected with you, with the world when travel has been limited,” Minister Hipkins said.

    “We want to continue to strengthen these partnerships, and to form new ones.”

    The Heads of Mission from India, Vietnam, Malaysia, the Philippines, South Korea and Japan also appeared in a live Q&A session with ENZ CE Grant McPherson.

  • Schools sector infrastructure a key focus of renewed ENZ-SIEBA partnership

    Under the agreement, SIEBA will provide resources and support tailored to schools, including webinars, workshops and newsletters, mentoring, good practice templates and advice.

    “We hope that this partnership will help schools retain the infrastructure and expertise they’ve worked so hard to build,” ENZ Business Development Manager Mary Camp says.

    “We’re looking forward to continuing our strategic partnership with SIEBA, working together to offer practical ways to support schools and their staff through the next phase of the pandemic.”

    SIEBA played a key role in supporting hundreds of schools through the early days of COVID. From April to June 2020, ENZ enabled SIEBA to provide triage support and crisis advice services to schools across the country, providing advice to manage issues related to the closure of the border and repatriation of international students.

    “We are very pleased to extend our partnership with ENZ and be involved in the important work of helping the school sector be ‘Ready-to-Go’ when students can once again enrol in New Zealand schools,” SIEBA Executive Director, John van der Zwan, says.

    “Special effort will go to providing professional learning and development and support for new international professionals as they join the sector and to provide opportunities for all international staff to explore and prepare for the challenges of working in a post COVID-19 environment.”

  • ENZ partners with ISANA to support sector capability

    Under the initiative, ISANA NZ will develop a suite of resources including guidelines, templates and frameworks to help support international education practitioners across the school and tertiary sectors.

    The resources will cover areas such as student support, student experience, critical incident management, intercultural competence, and professional leadership. They will be developed in concert with practitioners.

    ENZ Director Industry Laura Simpson says the initiative has been developed with recovery of the sector in mind.

    “This initiative focuses on the longer-term development of the international education sector’s capability. The resources are being developed to provide additional support for practitioners who support students and will help support the sector’s recovery. The initiative has been designed to support Goal 1 of the New Zealand International Education Strategy, 2018-2030, to ensure an excellent education and student experience.”

    ISANA NZ Executive Director Chris Beard says the work will identify and make available online a range of versatile resources that reflect good practice across the sector.

    “The materials will provide practical guidance, frameworks and models to help practitioners facilitate positive student experiences in areas such as intercultural engagement, social integration, mental health and student wellbeing. We are looking forward to developing the resources in partnership with experienced practitioners and subject-specific experts to ensure they are accessible, relevant and useful.”

    The resources will be developed over the next year in partnership with practitioners and stakeholders from across the sector. They will progressively be made available to the sector on ISANA’s website and ENZ’s Skills Lab.

  • Education New Zealand is running our first ever Prime Minister's Scholarship alumni survey – now live!

    Why are we running the survey?

    We want to be able to capture and communicate the stories of the 2,400 recipients of the Prime Ministers’ Scholarship to date.

    This will help us tell the story of the life-changing international student experiences abroad, and how they can influence professional life, engagement in social issues and ultimately benefits New Zealanders. We also aim to learn more about Prime Minister’s Scholarship alumni needs and to build a community of like-minded people. 

    What do we want to achieve?

    Our goal is to gather feedback from at least 1,000 of our alumni.

    What can you do?

    Feel free to share amongst your respective network where relevant. The key here is that we only want Prime Minister's scholarship alumni to respond.

    ENZ is seeking is keen to connect with our Prime Minister's Scholarship alumni and invite former participants to complete our first-ever alumni survey.

    Your answers will help us learn more about our alumni and the contribution that the Prime Minister’s Scholarship has had on individuals, Iwi and communities. 

    What you need to know: 
    • The survey will take no longer than 20 minutes. 
    • Responses will be kept confidential.

    Completed entries will go into a draw for Festival for the Future tickets (held 30 July - 1st August), with a choice of attending their event in Wellington or virtually. The survey will close on 21 July.

  • Get involved in upcoming Greater China initiatives

    China Annual Conference for International Education (CACIE)

    The annual CACIE conference will be held as a hybrid in-person/virtual event from 21-23 October in Beijing, directly before the China Education Expo.

    Organised by the China Education Association for International Exchange (CEAIE), CACIE provides opportunities for international education providers, agents and other professionals to network and explore ideas and issues within the sector. This year’s theme is New Opportunities and Prospects for Building an Open and High-Quality Education System.

    ENZ encourages New Zealand providers to submit proposals. Please visit the CACIE website and consider submitting a proposal.

    Proposals should focus on one of the four forums: Higher Education, Vocational Education, Basic Education, Thematic Education.

    Submissions must include: speaker photo, bio, and abstract (about 200 words). Email your submission to Zhang Zhaotian at zhangzhaotian@ceaie.edu.cn.

    Deadline for submitting proposals is 31 July. Spots are limited.

    China Education Expo (CEE)

    ENZ is currently planning a New Zealand national pavilion at the hybrid event from 23-24 October, which is expecting over 20,000 visitors.

    ENZ will send more information to New Zealand education providers to register to exhibit on the New Zealand national pavilion. 

  • 10 years of Impact: Festival for the Future is back in-person

    Festival for the Future 2021 is a three-day summit showcasing leadership and innovation for impact.

    This year, the festival will feature more than 35 speakers, including Deputy Prime Minister Grant Robertson; Animation Research Managing Director Sir Ian Taylor; Ethique Founder Brianne West; Young New Zealander of the Year Jazz Thornton; Banqer Founder and Impact Award Winner Kendall Flutey; and Sam Stubbs, Founder of Simplicity.

    ENZ is proud to partner with Inspiring Stories and the Festival for the Future as a silver sponsor, and will have an exhibition space on the festival’s marketplace floor. Through this partnership ENZ is advancing work towards the third pillar of the International Education Strategy 2018 - 2030, Global Citizenship.

    ENZ is also proudly supporting the Global Impact Award, presented to a young New Zealander who demonstrates leadership and takes action to support people and communities beyond our shores, especially in developing countries. The award will be presented as part of the Impact Awards night on Saturday 31 July.
